Subjective Memory Problems and Social Determinants of Health on Timed Instrumental Activities of Daily Living With Older Adults in the Active Study
Objective This study examines the longitudinal relationship between subjective memory problems (SMPs) and timed instrumental activity of daily living (IADL) performance while considering the effects of depressive symptoms and the moderating role of the social determinants of health (SDHs). Methods Data from 2622 older adults in the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) randomized control trial were analyzed longit…
The Independent and Interactive Effects of Economic Stability and Healthcare Access on 10-Year Cognitive Trajectories of Black/African American and White Older Adults from the Active Study
Objectives Social and structural determinants of health (SSDoH) have been linked to racial disparities in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). Research has established that living in an environment with greater economic stability (ES) or healthcare access (HCA) is associated with better baseline cognition, but the interactive effects between these distinct SSDoH on cognition over time have not been studied. Therefore, the present stu…
Effects of Cognitive Training on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias
Objective: We examined whether social determinants of health (SDoH) are associated with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) risk and the effects of cognitive training over a 20-year follow-up period. Methods: Data were obtained from 1605 participants in ACTIVE. SDoH measures were created using baseline data at the individual and neighborhood level. Incident ADRD was defined using administrative claims data (1999-2019). Cause-specific…
Associations of Subjective Memory with Life Space and Neighborhood Built Environment in Older Adults in the Active Study
Objectives: To investigate the longitudinal association of life space and neighborhood and built environment (NBE) with subjective memory among individuals 65 and older, and the mediating role of depressive symptoms, a major correlate of life space mobility, NBE, and subjective memory. Methods: We examined community-dwelling participants in the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly study ( N = 2,622, Mean age = 73.7 years,…
Associations of Multimorbid Medical Conditions and Health-Related Quality of Life Among Older African American Men
These findings suggest the importance of examining clusters of comorbid medical conditions and their relationships to outcomes within older African American men

African-American Mothers' Community Social Capital and Parenting Quality
This study examined community characteristics as predictors of parenting quality among African-American mothers. Residential stability and social capital are defined as positive features of community social organization, especially in areas with high concentrations of poor, single, African-American mothers with children. In residentially stable communities, members are able to form social ties to community, and this helps community members build …
Neighborhood Characteristics and Depression
Neighborhoods with poor-quality housing, few resources, and unsafe conditions impose stress, which can lead to depression. The stress imposed by adverse neighborhoods increases depression above and beyond the effects of the individual's own personal stressors, such as poverty and negative events within the family or workplace. Furthermore, adverse neighborhoods appear to intensify the harmful impact of personal stressors and interfere with the fo…
Recreating the Ghosts of Place
This article focuses on how impoverished racial and ethnic communities attribute meaning to place. I discuss theoretical ideas that support community organization along with practical ways of looking at community. Another aspect of this article involves the importance of a group's ties to place along with the constraints of a community's collective historical biography or “ghosts of place.” The “ghosts of place” refer to those presences real or i…
