Chile 50 Years Later A Special Dossier
When I arrived in Chile in July of 2023, after a COVID-generated absence of 4 years, the public agenda was defined by a series of scandals affecting the governing coalition of president Gabriel Boric, the future of the constitutional process then under the direction of the right and extreme right, and the imminent arrival of the 11th of September which would mark 50 years of the coup d'état that deposed the government of Salvador Allende. What wa…

Precarity and Belonging: Labor, Migration, and Noncitizenship
Precarity and Belonging examines how the movement of people and their incorporation, marginalization, and exclusion, under epochal conditions of labor and social precarity affecting both citizens and noncitizens, have challenged older notions of citizenship and alienage. This collection brings mobility, precarity, and citizenship together in order to explore the points of contact and friction, and, thus, the spaces for a possible politics of comm…

I sabella C osse . Mafalda: A Social and Political History of Latin America’s Global Comic
Mafalda, the Argentine comic strip created in 1964 by graphic artist Joaquín Salvador Lavado, better known as Quino, ran only until 1973. This may surprise many readers now, since for almost half a century Mafalda has seemed to be the contemporary of multiple generations, not only of Argentines or Latin Americans, but as Isabella Cosse shows in Mafalda: A Social and Political History of Latin America’s Global Comic, of people around the world. Li…

The Boom, the Literary, and Cultural Critique
This essay is an effort to consider the Boom of Latin American literature in the 1960s and 1970s within the context of Ángel Rama's critical writing, especially his essays on the development of twentieth-century narrative (first part) and his Transculturación narrativa en América Latina (second part), which their author saw as critical attempts to deal with the discursive, cultural, and political effects generated by the Boom. Running parallel to…
Dreaming Transnationally in America
Transnational circuits, as social practices, are not immaterial or virtual, but they do not depend on traditional understandings of one territorial location. Rather than fully and singularly determining the lives of its inhabitants, these local spaces belong now to a transterritory established by the physical, cultural, and imaginative labor of migrants connecting two such spaces, beyond the boundaries of one nation-state. Transnationalism, as a …
New Approaches to Latin American Studies: Culture and Power
Academic and research fields are moved by fads, waves, revolutionaries, paradigm shifts, and turns. They all imply a certain degree of change that alters the conditions of a stable system, producing an imbalance that needs to be addressed by the field itself. New Approaches to Latin American Studies: Culture and Power offers researchers and students from different theoretical fields an essential, turn-organized overview of the radical transformat…

The Memory of the National and the National as Memory
This essay seeks to illuminate a different, more encompassing kind of transition than that from dictatorship to post-dictatorship (and its attendant forms of memory of military brutal force and human rights abuses) often privileged by studies of political violence and social memory. The focus is twofold: first, to describe a transition from the world of the social to that of the post-social, i.e. a transition from a welfare state-centered form of…
Exemplary Ambivalence in Late Nineteenth-Century Spanish America: Narrating Creole Subjectivity
Elisabeth Austin's volume sets out to study exemplary novels published in Latin America in the second half of the nineteenth century. They include Eugenio Cambaceres's four novels, José Asunción Silva's De sobremesa (1925), José Martí's Lucía Jerez (1885), and Clorinda Matto de Turner's Aves sin nido (1889). In addition to defining the genre, her introduction includes a reading of two of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento's books: Facundo (1845), a text …

Culture, neo-liberalism and citizen communication: The case of Radio Tierra in Chile
This article analyses the Chilean independent and not-for profit station Radio Tierra In the general context of the work of two key Chilean sociologists, José Joaquín Brunner and Manuel Antonio Garretón, in particular the latter’s theory of an epochal transformation in the relationship between culture and neo-liberalism in Chile over the preceding 30 years. More specifically, it suggests that Radio Tierra makes evident the emergence of a new form…
