I feel so trapped: Women's Experiences of Antisocial Behaviour Intervention in Social Housing
Whilst women and girls are traditionally more likely to be viewed as vulnerable, when their behaviour is seen as challenging, the status of vulnerability may be removed by services in order to justify more punitive sanctions. This paper proposes a more nuanced understanding of vulnerability to explore women’s experiences of ASB intervention. Drawing on longitudinal, qualitative research with women living in social housing who are alleged to be en…
It Feels Like Temporary accommodation: The Impact of Antisocial Behaviour Interventions on Alleged Perpetrators’ Feelings of Ontological Security in Social Housing
ASB interventions have been framed as a necessity to allow residents to feel safe and secure within their own homes by intervening with those who act in a way that causes nuisance or annoyance (Burney, 2005; Carr, 2010), however, little research has been conducted into how the ontological security of alleged perpetrators of ASB is impacted by ASB interventions. This research situates ontological security within the theoretical framework of vulner…
The sampling scheme matters: Pan troglodytes troglodytes and P. t . schweinfurthii are characterized by clinal genetic variation rather than a strong subspecies break
Populations of an organism living in marked geographical or evolutionary isolation from other populations of the same species are often termed subspecies and expected to show some degree of genetic distinctiveness. The common chimpanzee ( Pan troglodytes ) is currently described as four geographically delimited subspecies: the western ( P. t. verus ), the nigerian‐cameroonian ( P. t. ellioti ), the central ( P. t. troglodytes ) and the eastern ( …
The genetic population structure of wild western lowland gorillas ( Gorilla gorilla gorilla ) living in continuous rain forest
To understand the evolutionary histories and conservation potential of wild animal species it is useful to assess whether taxa are genetically structured into different populations and identify the underlying factors responsible for any clustering. Landscape features such as rivers may influence genetic population structure, and analysis of structure by sex can further reveal effects of sex-specific dispersal. Using microsatellite genotypes obtai…
Designing new UK‐WHO growth charts: Implications for health staff use and understanding of charts and growth monitoring
New pre-school UK charts have been produced incorporating the new World Health Organization growth standards based on healthy breastfed infants. This paper describes the process by which the charts and evidence-based instructions were designed and evaluated, and what it revealed about professional understanding of charts and growth monitoring. A multidisciplinary expert group drew on existing literature, new data analyses and parent focus groups …
Is baby-led weaning feasible? When do babies first reach out for and eat finger foods: Is baby led weaning feasible?
The baby-led weaning philosophy proposes that when solids are introduced, infants should be encouraged to self-feed with solid food, as opposed to spoon-feeding purees. We used data from the Gateshead Millennium Study (GMS) to define the range of ages at which infants reach out for and eat finger foods and related this to developmental status. GMS recruited infants shortly after birth and followed them prospectively using postal questionnaires. O…
Some excavations on the line of the Antonine Wall, 1994-2001
The results of over thirty separate excavations and watching briefs along the line of the Antonine Wall are presented. The alignment and character of the frontier works and fort defences were clarified in several places. New information was obtained regarding a possible enclosure on the north side of the Wall near Auchendavy. Material includes
Excavation of an Iron Age timber structure beside the Candle Stane recumbent stone circle, Aberdeenshire
Reports excavations undertaken in 1996/1997 by Edinburgh University Centre for Field Archaeology (CFA). The area had suffered extensive damage from quarrying prior to its recognition as an archaeological site and therefore less than one half of the relevant area remained. The structure was defined by a ring-groove that would have been c 15.5m in diameter; it enclosed three near-concentric rings of post-holes. Charcoal from these features was radi…
