  • Digital reconstruction of a serpent column at Chichen Itza's El Castillo

    Open Access•Scott Mcavoy, Claudia García-Solís et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•References: 2

Atop El Castillo, the largest pyramid within the Maya site of Chichen Itza, in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, stand two ruined columns that once portrayed the feathered serpent deity K'uk'ulkan. 3D-imaging technologies have identified scattered sculptural fragments belonging to these columns, allowing a digital reconstruction that opens new possibilities for their conservation

  • Developing an interoperable cloud-based visualization workflow for 3D archaeological heritage data

    Open Access•Arianna Campiani, Scott Mcavoy et al.•ARTICLE•Digital Applications in…•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 53

  • The Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda

Open Access•Philippe Max Rouja, Craig W Schneider et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2022

The authors explore a novel interdisciplinary approach to researching, collecting and communicating local site-specific data on recent sea-level rise using persistent black-zone biotic levels evident on historical coastal stone structures by a stable community of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) at the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda. Photographs taken at the Dockyard in 1870, 2007 and 2017 show an upward shift in this living cyanobacterial commu…

  • OpenDig

    Matthew L Vincent, Falko Kuester et al.•ARTICLE•Near Eastern Archaeology•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Technology is rapidly changing, and these changes are affecting disciplines across the board, including archaeology. Changes in technology can be challenging, but can also bring benefits to the discipline overall. This article looks at OpenDig in the context of technological developments, presenting it as a framework for handling the metadata collected in the field, which serves as the primary contextual information for the analysis and study of …

  • Scientific Visualization, 3D Immersive Virtual Reality Environments, and Archaeology in Jordan and the Near East

    Kyle A Knabb, Jurgen P Schulze et al.•ARTICLE•Near Eastern Archaeology•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Scientific visualization allows researchers to examine their data in high definition 2D and 3D environments. Field research conducted in the Middle East by the UC San Diego Levantine and Cyber-Archaeology Lab, in collaboration with the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Art, Architecture and Archaeology (CISA3) takes full advantage of a suite of state-of-the-art visualization platforms at the UC San Diego Qualcomm Institute. Research intere…

  • Structure from Motion

    Matthew D Howland, Falko Kuester et al.•ARTICLE•Near Eastern Archaeology•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 6

This article focuses on the UC San Diego Edom Lowlands Regional Archaeology Project's (ELRAP) development of a Structure from Motion-Based 3D field recording project. It includes a brief discussion of the relative advantages and disadvantages of this technique over other three-dimensional recording systems. The article also describes in detail the equipment and techniques used to collect the data needed to create 3D models of excavation units and…
