Portable OSL chrono-stratigraphic signatures at khirbet ‘Aujah el-Foqa: Implications for site formation processes
Khirbet ‘Aujah el-Foqa, located in the Jordan Valley, has been excavated since 2019. Excavations have revealed it is a fortified, multi-period site with remains from the Middle Bronze II, Iron Age II, and Ottoman Period. The formation of a hilltop desert khirbet, where pedosediment deposition and pre- to post-occupation processes differ from a settlement-layered tell, raises questions regarding stratigraphic structuring and chronological attribut…
Identifying buried byzantine-early Islamic agricultural soils in the Yavne Hinterlands, Israel: A Multi-Proxy Approach
Khirbat Ḥasan: Water Control Systems and Agriculture-Related Activities along Naḥal Har’el (pp. 17–65)
The excavations at Khirbat Ḥasan were carried out in a wide valley on the Naḥal Har’el floodplain. The findings attest that in antiquity, the inhabitants exploited the area for agricultural activities. Eight areas were opened: in Area A, water control systems dating from the Intermediate Bronze Age and the Roman–Byzantine periods were discovered; Area G yielded Hellenistic-period pottery, a Roman–Byzantine rural road and agricultural terrace wall…
Geoarchaeology in the Absence of Layers: Large‐Scale Sampling From an Iron Age Urban Context in the Southern Levant
Understanding the impact of erosion and postdepositional processes is essential for reconstructing site formation in ancient tells. At Tel 1 Burna, a multiperiod stratified site in the Shephelah region of central Israel, we integrate portable X‐ray fluorescence (pXRF), portable optically stimulated luminescence (pOSL), and organic residue analysis (ORA). Our aim is to assess how postdepositional processes shaped the archaeological record in Tel B…
Wine Production in the Byzantine Winepresses of Southern Israel: Insights from a Statistical Analysis
This paper focuses on various technological aspects of Byzantine winepresses. The Byzantine period presents a unique point in time when the increased demand for wine from the Southern Levant is attested by the introduction of new elements in the architecture and design of the winepress. Whereas past studies have stressed the importance of the introduction of the screw-press, it is shown here that this is but one of numerous features that helped i…

Chalcolithic groundwater mining in the southern Levant: Open, vertical shafts in the Late Chalcolithic central coastal plain settlement landscape of Israel
Levantine adaptive water subsistence and exploitative water management studies concerning late pre- and proto-history have intensified since 2000. This comes in the wake of findings concerning domestic water (e.g., groundwater wells and surface irrigation systems) in particular in the eastern Mediterranean basin. Excavations conducted over the last 15 years on Israel's central coastal plain revealed several clusters of anthropogenic, vertical, na…

Intentional, dual purpose of ancient wine presses as cisterns for runoff water harvesting in drylands
Rock-quarried wine presses were prevalent across the Mediterranean Basin throughout ancient times and particularly during the Late Roman and Byzantine ages. Archeological surveys have uncovered many presses across Israel. Overall, a ratio of ~5 m −1 has been recorded between treading floor area (in m 2 ) and volume of collecting vat (in m 3 ). A recent survey of two presses located at the transition zone between the semi-arid northern Negev, Jude…
Dust clouds, climate change and coins: Consiliences of palaeoclimate and economy in the Late Antique southern Levant
The climate factor has become a focus of much historical and archaeological investigation, encouraged recently by improvements in palaeoclimatic techniques and interest in global climate change. This article examines correlations between climate and history in the Byzantine southern Levant (c. 4th–7th centuries AD). A proposed 5th century economic downturn attested to by numismatic trends is shown to coincide with palaeoclimatic evidence for drou…
The birth, life and death of an Iron Age house at Tel ‘Eton, Israel
Using a biographic-like approach, this article presents the initial results of the study of an elite Iron Age house at Tel ‘Eton, from its conception, through its birth and life, to its death and decomposition. Massive preparations preceded the construction of the house, and the latter incorporated continuous foundations, and quality building materials, including ashlar stones. The building was pre-planned, and some of the original rooms had two …

Ancient Environment and Human Interaction at Tell eṣ-Ṣâfi/Gath
An archaeological site is an integral part of its surrounding landscape. This is one of the main novel approaches in the long-term archaeological project of Tell eṣ-Ṣâfi/Gath. The site has interacted with its surrounding for more than three thousand years. It was impacted by the ancient environment, but also had an impact on both the ancient environment and current conditions. The following is a summary of environmental research that has been car…

A unique human-made trench at Tell es-Sâfi/Gath, Israel: Anthropogenic impact and landscape response
Tell es-Sâfi/gath is situated in the semiarid foothills of central Israel, adjacent to the coastal . plain. An enigmatic landscape feature, noted on aerial photographs, encircles the tell on three sides. This unique feature, unknown from other Near Eastern tells, was investigated. Methods of analysis include aerial photographs, field surveys, excavations, soil analyses, chronotypological ceramic classification, and radiocarbon dating. We conclude…

Landscape Archaeology in a Dry-Stream Valley near Tell es-Sâfì/Gath (Israel): Agricultural Terraces and the Origin of Fill Deposits
As part of the long-term archaeological project being conducted at Tell e-Sâfi/Gath in the semi-arid foothills of the Judean Mountains, a first order dry stream channel located in a valley east of the main site was surveyed and soil pits excavated in selected locations. A ditch, 10 m in length, was dug perpendicular to one of the agricultural terraces, showing that the small valley is filled with soil to a depth of more than 3 m above bedrock. Th…
