Terra-cotta Roof Tiles in the Ancient Synagogues of Judaea/Palaestina
Terra-cotta roof tiles are some of the most common and volume-intensive finds in the excavation of ancient synagogues, but their significance has received only minor consideration. This article reviews the evidence for terra-cotta roof tiles, which were the preferred roofing used in ancient synagogues in the Late Roman and Byzantine periods. A change took place from non-tiled roofs in Early Roman synagogues to the common use of terra-cotta roof t…
Between Gaulanitis and Hippos: The Roman Road in the Southern Golan Heights in Context
The Roman road that transverses the southern Golan is one of the best-preserved ancient roads in the region. The present study provides new evidence regarding its route, its date of construction and abandonment, and its military-administrative and geospatial relationship with the surrounding landscape and settlements. The research combines diverse methodologies, including historical cartographic data, survey, excavation, a mobility model of the r…
XRF Analysis of Village and Urban Basalt Architecture in the Hippos Territorium during the Roman Period
This case study examines the use of X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) as an effective method for defining distinct chemical compositions of local basalt stone from different sources in the Roman period, even when their quarries have not been identified. It also deals with the archaeological question if public and monumental structures from a village and urban site shared the same stone sources and stonemason's workshops. Ninety‐six samples from the Hippos…
Archaeological and Historical Evidence Reveal New Insights on the Maritime Cultural Landscape of the Sea of Galilee
Low water levels of the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret) in recent decades due to droughts and anthropogenic factors have exposed large portions of the lakebed. Archaeological surveys of the newly exposed areas yielded prehistoric sites, harbours, anchorages, shipwrecks, cargoes and shoreline installations, attesting to changing maritime activity on the lake through time. The different assemblages are presented and discussed within the context of t…
A Hiding Complex and Ritual Bath (Miqveh) at Ḥorvat Maskana and the Question of Their Use in the Byzantine Period
Parts of a subterranean hiding complex and a miqveh (ritual bath) were excavated at Ḥorvat Maskana in 2020. The Byzantine pottery from the excavation, along with the dating of the plaster, suggests that the complex was used in the Byzantine period and may originally have been hewn in the Roman period. Additional hiding complexes with not only Roman but also Byzantine pottery exist elsewhere in Galilee. The presence of Byzantine pottery inside som…
Roman-period synagogues of the Golan
Synagogue chronology has been the subject of scholarly debate for decades, especially in the Galilee, where synagogues have been dated both to the Roman and Byzantine (= late-antique) periods. 1 For the Golan, 2 the consensus has been that there is no evidence for them in the Roman period, and especially not in the 2nd-3rd c. The c .30 synagogues there, nearly all in the W central Golan, have always been precluded from the debate since, with the …
Interregional Trade in the Roman Period: A Diachronic Study of Common Kitchenware from Hippos of the Decapolis
In this article we explore interregional trade at the polis of Antiochia Hippos during the Roman period. The discovery of chronologically well-defined Roman-period ceramic assemblages at the site provides an opportunity for a diachronic study of Roman period commerce between Hippos, the only polis in the southern Golan, and the neighbouring Galilee. Results of micromorphological analysis of common Roman period kitchenware indicate that while in t…
Ancient Environment and Human Interaction at Tell eṣ-Ṣâfi/Gath
An archaeological site is an integral part of its surrounding landscape. This is one of the main novel approaches in the long-term archaeological project of Tell eṣ-Ṣâfi/Gath. The site has interacted with its surrounding for more than three thousand years. It was impacted by the ancient environment, but also had an impact on both the ancient environment and current conditions. The following is a summary of environmental research that has been car…
