U.S. public perceptions on whether risk of dementia and stroke can be modified through maintaining or changing lifestyle
This cross-sectional cohort, mimicking the general U.S. population, demonstrated that over 80% of individuals ever knew someone with dementia or stroke and that this was positively associated with the perceptions that dementia and stroke risk could be modified through lifestyle changes. The widespread exposure of the U.S. public to dementia and stroke first-hand can be leveraged into more effective preventive strategies
The predictive validity of a Brain Care Score for late-life depression and a composite outcome of dementia, stroke, and late-life depression
These data further demonstrate the shared risk factors across depression, dementia, and stroke. The findings suggest that a higher BCS, indicative of healthier lifestyle choices, is significantly associated with a lower incidence of late-life depression and a composite brain health outcome. Additional validation of the BCS is warranted to assess the weighting of its components, its motivational aspects, and its acceptability and adaptability in r…
Reflections from the Lebanese field
Humanitarian aid workers caring for Syrian refugees face major stressors as they attend to refugees' needs on the field. Without adequate psychosocial support, evidence has shown that fieldworkers experience high burnout and turnover as well as long-term poor mental health. Unfortunately, scarce training in this regard leaves them ill-equipped to care for themselves and practice resilience while handling trauma in the field. This paper highlights…
Humanitarian space and well-being
Social and fieldworkers face enormous challenges in assisting millions of Syrian refugees in Lebanon since the Syrian war in 2011. We sought to assess the feasibility and acceptability of an adapted version of the SMART-3RP (Stress Management Relaxation Response Resilience Training) training to address the emotional and physical burden on the humanitarian field. Data were collected using the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), blood pressure, pulse an…
Needs assessment with elder Syrian refugees in Lebanon
Currently, over 1 million Syrian and Palestinian refugees have fled Syria to take refuge in Lebanon. Among this vulnerable population, elder refugees warrant particular concern, as they shoulder a host of additional health and safety issues that require additional resources. However, the specific needs of elder refugees are often overlooked, especially during times of crisis. Our study used a semi-structured interview to survey the needs of elder…
Microfinance and women's health
Microfinance programs in Ethiopia have existed since the late-1970s, but the relationship between microfinance and women's health has not been extensively investigated. This paper reports on a study evaluating the characteristics of a sample of women participating in microfinance operations with health outcomes, as measured by a health check up in the past year and knowledge about family planning methods. A total of 100 women were selected for th…
