Ecology of master’s thesis research and supervision
‘Laying the foundation for a PhD study”
Informed by self-determination theory, this study investigates the motivations behind students’ voluntary pursuit of a master’s thesis and the crucial role of supervisory support in their academic journey. The study also explores the impact of writing a master’s thesis on their growth and well-being. Data were collected through interviews with 20 students from diverse disciplines in government-funded universities in Hong Kong. The interviews cent…
‘What would happen if I die in a foreign country?’
Uncertainty, when perceived as a danger, can severely undermine a cancer patient’s recovery, resilience, and quality of life. Managing this uncertainty is therefore vital to well-being. Master’s thesis supervision in Hong Kong
This paper reports on a study of master’s thesis supervision in taught postgraduate programs. From the supervisors’ accounts of their supervisory experiences, four core narratives have been constructed: scholarly partnership, directional partnership, affiliative partnership, and non-directive …

“Commenting on your work is a waste of time only!”
“Chasing my supervisor all day long like a hungry child seeking her mother!”
Supervisory feedback across disciplines
Supervisory feedback on thesis drafts and presentations is arguably the most important source of information for graduate students, particularly those writing their theses in English-as-a-foreign-language contexts, to conduct, complete, report and improve graduate research and benefit from the process. Despite its critical role in scaffolding students’ research and thesis writing, supervisory feedback on master’s theses has been under-researched,…
