Effect of intervention on decision making of treatment for disease progression, prostate‐specific antigen biochemical failure and prostate cancer death
BACKGROUND: Patient preference for the choice of treatment modality for prostate cancer has increasingly gained attention. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of client-oriented decision on long-term mortality, disease progression and biochemical failure compared with standard treatment protocol (TP). METHODS: With data from a Finnish multicentre, randomized controlled trial with two arms [104 in the enhanced patient participation (EPP) arm and 106 i…
The role of parents, friends and teachers in adolescents' cigarette smoking and tombak dipping in Sudan
Tobacco use by parents, teachers and friends was associated with adolescents' tobacco habits. The influence of friends was the strongest. In developing programmes against adolescents' tobacco habits, there is need to target the influence of these 'significant others'. Sudan needs to develop and implement comprehensive anti-smoking and anti-tombak dipping legislation to reduce the growing prevalence of such habits
The sense of coherence and risk of injuries
STUDY OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that individuals with a strong sense of coherence (SOC) have a decreased incidence of external cause injuries and to study the role of alcohol consumption and occupational category in that association. DESIGN: Participants of the Helsinki Heart Study were followed up for injuries for eight years through the national hospital discharge register and cause of death statistics. Cox proportional hazards models w…
Alternative technologies in cervical cancer screening
Large-scale randomised trials are useful to clarify effectiveness and cost-effectiveness issues of the most important technological alternatives in the screening programmes for cervical cancer
Radon in homes and risk of lung cancer
OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk of lung cancer associated with exposure at home to the radioactive disintegration products of naturally occurring radon gas. DESIGN: Collaborative analysis of individual data from 13 case-control studies of residential radon and lung cancer. SETTING: Nine European countries. SUBJECTS: 7148 cases of lung cancer and 14,208 controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Relative risks of lung cancer and radon gas concentrations in…
Varicose veins in a Finnish population aged 40-60
STUDY OBJECTIVE--To assess the prevalence and the extent of treatment of varicose veins in a Finnish population. DESIGN--A prevalence study in a defined cohort was performed by using a mailed questionnaire. The method's validity was tested in a random sample of 166 individuals who were studied clinically. SUBJECTS--In 1989 a questionnaire was mailed to every resident born in 1929, 1939, and 1949 who was living in Tampere, the second largest town …
Predictions of epidemiology and the evaluation of cancer control measures and the setting of policy priorities
Cervical cancer in Finland and South Wales
The population-based cancer registry data on patients with cervical cancer in Finland and South Wales in 1960--69 were analysed for survival. Patients with carcinoma-in-situ experienced essentially the normal life expectancy. Those with invasive carcinoma experienced 75% of normal post-registration life expectancy in Finland but only 45% in South Wales. The difference was due to higher frequency and to better survival of patients with localised c…
Selective screening for cervical cancer. Experience of the Finnish mass screening system
Names of women eligible to be screened for cervical cancer are taken from the national population registry and the women are invited by a personal letter. The data, from these mass screenings are analysed and stored at the screening registry. To reduced the costs of the system and to increase the yield of preinvasive lesions the idea of selective screening was considered. Tt was decided that if people were selected according to their risk factors…
