External focus strategy improves visuomotor control of gait in older adults
The Influence of Attentional Focus on Gait Stability and Conscious Movement Processing During Challenging Walking Conditions in Older Adults
Objectives It has been proposed that the effect of an external focus in gait might be more beneficial in more challenging tasks compared to a natural walking condition. This study sought to (a) address any causal link between an external focus and improved gait stability during walking on an unstable surface and (b) explore any possible psycho-cognitive mechanism underpinning these changes in older adults. Methods 98 older adults (mean age: 70.6 …
The effects of errorless psychomotor training in the Y balance lower limb reaching task
Effectiveness of a theory-driven mHealth intervention in promoting post-surgery rehabilitation adherence in patients who had anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction
Establishing childhood disability clinics may help reduce the prevalence of disability among children in Africa
Globally, there are about a billion people comprising of about 95 million children who experience disability. The number of people in Africa living with disability is about 80 million people; out of which 10%−15% are children of school age. The causes of disability among these children include epilepsy, vision loss, or hearing loss, cerebral palsy, poliomyelitis, tetanus, cerebrospinal meningitis and malaria. However, these causes of disability a…
Effects of Single-Task, Dual-Task and Analogy Training during Gait Rehabilitation of Older Adults at Risk of Falling
It has been suggested that implicit motor learning via dual-task or analogy training during gait rehabilitation may yield better outcomes in older adults by reducing the propensity for the conscious processing of movements (movement-specific reinvestment). The current study investigated the immediate effects of single-task, dual-task, and analogy training on reinvestment propensity and fall-related rehabilitation outcomes among older adults at ri…
Development and pilot evaluation of a mobile app on parent-child exercises to improve physical activity and psychosocial outcomes of Hong Kong Chinese children
ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT03279354 , registered September 11, 2017 (Prospectively registered)
Gait Stability in Older Adults During Level-Ground Walking
External focus instructions did not improve gait stability in older adults when compared to Control condition. Internal focus instructions appear to compromise gait stability. Future research should investigate if walking instructions that refer to body movements explicitly compromise gait rehabilitation for older adults in clinical settings
The Role of Movement-Specific Reinvestment in Visuomotor Control of Walking by Older Adults
Older adults with a high propensity for movement-specific reinvestment seem to need more time to "plan" future stepping movements, yet show worse stepping accuracy than older adults with a low propensity for movement-specific reinvestment. Future research should examine whether older adults with a higher propensity for reinvestment are more likely to display movement errors that lead to falling
