  • The effect of mass migration on disease transmission

    Open Access•Alicia Barriga, Richard A Dunn•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2024•References: 6

Since 2014, millions of Venezuelans have fled to neighboring countries. There is only one accessible land crossing along the Brazil–Venezuela border (Pacaraima) and the Brazilian highway system limits migrants to one route through the Amazon for almost 1000 km. Using this event as a quasi‐random treatment, we find that refugee migration increased malaria incidence in Pacaraima, but this was limited to individuals of Venezuelan nationality. We fin…

  • Replicating the Levitt and Porter estimates of drunk driving

Open Access•Richard A Dunn, Nathan Tefft et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Econometrics•2020

Estimates of the prevalence and risk of drinking‐and‐driving are a high‐priority need for researchers and policymakers. Although robust to systematic misreporting and sample selection and far cheaper to implement than surveys, their methodological…

  • Obesity inequality in Malaysia

    Richard A Dunn, Andrew K G Tan et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Our results demonstrate that the higher levels of income and education that accrue with economic development will likely not eliminate obesity inequality. This leads us to conclude that reduction of obesity inequality, as well the overall level of obesity, requires increased efforts to alter the lifestyle behaviors of Malaysians

  • The Politics of Hope and Despair

    Open Access•Timothy J Classen, Richard A Dunn•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 16

OBJECTIVES: This article examines the effect of election outcomes on suicide rates by combining the theory of social integration developed by Durkheim with the models of rational choice used in economics. METHODS: Theory predicts that states with a greater percentage of residents who supported the losing candidate would tend to exhibit a relative increase in suicide rates. However, being around others who also supported the losing candidate may i…
