  • Aspirations, Poverty, and Education. Evidence from India

Pieter Serneels, Stefan Dercon•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2021

This paper investigates whether aspirations matter for education, which offers a common route out of poverty. We find that mother aspirations are strongly related to the child’s grade achieved at age 18. The relation is nonlinear, suggesting there is a threshold, and depends on caste, household income and the village setting. The coefficients remain large and significant when applying control function estimation, using firstborn son as instrument…

  • Recruitment, Effort, and Retention Effects of Performance Contracts for Civil Servants

Open Access•Clare Leaver, Owen Ozier et al.•BOOK•2020

This paper reports on a two-tiered experiment designed to separately identify the selection and effort margins of pay-for-performance (P4P). At the recruitment stage, teacher labor markets were randomly assigned to a 'pay-for-percentile' or fixed-wage contract. Once recruits were placed, an unexpected, incentive-compatible, school-level re-randomization was performed, so that some teachers who applied for a fixed-wage contract ended up being paid…

  • The Impact of Armed Conflict on Economic Performance

    Open Access•Pieter Serneels, Marijke Verpoorten•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2015•Cited by: 44•References: 76

Important gaps remain in the understanding of the economic consequences of civil war. Focusing on the conflict in Rwanda in the early 1990s, and using micro data, this article finds that households and localities that experienced more intense conflict are lagging behind in terms of consumption six years after the conflict, a finding that is robust to taking into account the endogeneity of violence. Significantly different returns to land and labo…

  • Does Employment Generation Really Matter For Poverty Reduction

Catalina Gutiérrez, Carlo Orecchia et al.•BOOK•2007

This paper analyzes how the employment/productivity profile of growth and its sectoral pattern are correlated with poverty reduction. The authors use a sample of 104 short-run growth spells in developing countries, between 1980 and 2001. They also identify some conditions of the labor market and the economic environment that are associated with employment-intensive growth or specific sectoral growth. The results show that, in the short run, altho…

  • For public service or money

Open Access•Pieter Serneels, Magnus Lindelow et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2007•Cited by: 7

Geographical imbalances in the health workforce have been a consistent feature of nearly all health systems, and especially in developing countries. In this paper we investigate the willingness to work in a rural area among final year nursing and medical students in Ethiopia. Analysing data obtained from contingent valuation questions for final year students from three medical schools and eight nursing schools, we find that there is substantial h…
