Social norms information enhances the efficacy of an appearance-based sun protection intervention
Marital quality predicts hospital stay following coronary artery bypass surgery for women but not men
The Effects Of Hair Color And Cosmetic Use On Perceptions Of A Female's Ability
This experiment examined whether a female applicant's hair color and use of cosmetics might affect perceptions of her ability for a professional position. One hundred thirty six college students reviewed the identical professional resume of a female applicant for the position of a staff accountant. Attached to the resume was a photograph of the stimulus female applicant either wearing or not wearing cosmetics and depicted with brunette, red, or b…
Social comparison and affiliation under threat: Effects on recovery from major surgery
This study extends stress and affiliation research by examining the effects of preoperative roommate assignments on the affiliation patterns, preoperative anxiety, and postoperative recovery of 84 male coronary-bypass patients. Patients were assigned preoperatively to a room alone or to a semiprivate room with a roommate who was either cardiac or noncardiac and either preoperative or postoperative. Patients assigned to a roommate who was postoper…
Social comparison and affiliation under threat: Going beyond the affiliate-choice paradigm

The results failed to support the emotional si…
Preferences for health care involvement, perceived control and surgical recovery: A prospective study
Self-confirmatory attribution, egocentrism, and the perpetuation of self-beliefs
Etude des relations entre les conceptions de soi, les attributions que les sujets font pour leurs propres comportements et leurs attentes de comportements similaires chez les autres (N=140
Contingency judgments by depressed college students: Sadder but not always wiser
We examined depressed and nondepressed college students' perceptions of control over outcomes in a task similar to the one introduced by Alloy and Abramson (1979, Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, when subjects completed a contingency learning task with no one else present, nondepressed subjects perceived themselves to have more control over frequently occurring response-independent outcomes than did depressed subjects, which replicated Alloy and A…
