  • Change in alcohol outlet density and alcohol-related harm to population health (CHALICE)

Open Access•D Fone, Frank Dunstan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

This inter-disciplinary study requires expertise in epidemiology and public health, health informatics, medical statistics, geographical information science, and research into alcohol-related violence. Information governance requirements for the use of record-linked data have been approved together with formal data access agreements for the use of the Welsh Health Survey and Police data. The dissemination strategy will include policy makers in na…

  • An investigation through microsimulation of the inequities in Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) mortality and morbidity in Wales

WJ* Watkins, ZES Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Objective Levels of mortality and morbidity due to Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) vary considerably over the regions of Wales. The Welsh Assembly has a stated aim to reduce CHD mortality over the whole of Wales while at the same time aiming for a more rapid improvement in the most deprived areas. The main thrust of the work presented here is the examination through microsimulation of inequities in coronary healthcare over the whole of Wales and the…

  • Rural/urban mortality differences in England and Wales and the effect of deprivation adjustment

  • Protocol of the baseline assessment for the Environments for Healthy Living (EHL) Wales cohort study

Open Access•Rebecca Hill, Rebecca A Hill et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

The baseline assessment of EHL will provide information concerning the impact of gestational and postnatal environments on birth outcomes and maternal and infant health. The findings can be used to inform the development of complex interventions targeted at structural, environmental factors, intended to reduce ill-health. Long-term follow-up of the cohort will focus on relationships between environmental exposures and the later development of adv…

  • An analysis of the effect of intrauterine growth retardation on spirometric lung function measures of 8-year-old children

Sailesh Kotecha, William J Watkins et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2010

Objective Increasing evidence suggests that intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) is associated with long-term morbidities, including respiratory outcomes. The relationship between IUGR and lung function has been studied in adults, but few studies have investigated childhood respiratory outcomes and it is unclear if catch-up growth in these children influences lung function. We investigated the hypothesis that lung function differs in 8- to 9-ye…

  • Does Anxiety Affect Risk of Dementia? Findings From the Caerphilly Prospective Study

John Gallacher, Anthony Bayer et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2009

Objective: To examine the association of anxiety with incident dementia and cognitive impairment not dementia (CIND). Methods: We conducted a prospective study of men aged 48 to 67 years at baseline anxiety assessment; we measured cognition 17 years later. We studied 1481 men who were either eligible for examination or were known to have dementia. Trait Anxiety was assessed using the Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory. Psychological distre…

  • Does social cohesion modify the association between area income deprivation and mental health? A multilevel analysis

D Fone, Frank Dunstan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2007

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing belief that the places where people live influence their health, there is surprisingly little consistent evidence for their associations with mental health. We investigated the joint effect of community and individual-level socio-economic deprivation and social cohesion on individual mental health status. METHODS: Multilevel analysis of population survey data on 10,653 adults aged 18-74 years nested within the 3…

  • Perceptions of the neighbourhood environment and self rated health: A multilevel analysis of the Caerphilly Health and Social Needs Study

Open Access•W Poortinga, Frank Dunstan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

This study shows that different aspects of the neighbourhood environment are associated with people's self rated health, which may partly reflect the health impacts of neighbourhood socio-economic status. The findings further suggest that the social environment is more important for women's health, but that individual socio-economic status is more important for men's health

  • Measuring the neighbourhood using UK benefits data: A multilevel analysis of mental health status

Open Access•D Fone, David L Fone et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

This study provides evidence for substantive contextual effects on mental health, and in particular the importance of small-area levels of economic inactivity and disability. DWP benefits data offer a more specific measure of local neighbourhood than generic deprivation indices and offer a starting point to hypothesise possible causal pathways to individual mental health status

  • Council tax valuation bands, socio-economic status and health outcome: A cross-sectional analysis from the Caerphilly Health and Social Needs Study

Open Access•D Fone, David L Fone et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

CTVBs assigned to individuals were strongly associated with the health and lifestyle outcomes modelled in this study. CTVBs are readily available for all residential properties and deserve further consideration as a proxy for socio-economic status in epidemiological studies in Great Britain

  • Perceptions of social capital and the built environment and mental health

  • The validity of body mass index for the assessment of adiposity in children with disease states

    Open Access•J Warner, J T Warner et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1997

Recently published standards for body mass index (BMI) based on population studies of height and weight in healthy British children allow an easy but indirect assessment of adiposity in healthy children. However, assessment of adiposity based on standards derived from reference populations may not be appropriate for use in subjects with disease states associated with abnormalities of growth and body composition. This hypothesis was tested by comp…
