Back to square one? Exploring boundary work by purchasers of health and social care
This multiple case study investigates how purchasers of health and social care (re)configure boundaries between sectors to incorporate a novel care model. Purchasers’ boundary work unfolded through (1) downplaying and expanding to assume joint responsibility and devise workarounds, (2) coalescing by sustaining workarounds and devising an experimental payment modality, and (3) limiting and reinforcing through instrumentalizing evidence and off-loa…
A Mixed-method Study on the Implementation of a Medical Psychiatric Care Unit
The Erasmus MC MPU meets its founding goals. Physicians recognize its added value, particularly in managing patients with disruptive behaviors and high care needs. The integration of medical and psychiatric expertise has fulfilled expectations

The Effect of Network-Level Payment Models on Care Network Performance
Introduction: Traditional payment models reward volume rather than value. Moving away from reimbursing separate providers to network-level reimbursement is assumed to support structural changes in health care organizations that are necessary to improve patient care. This scoping review evaluates the performance of care networks that have adopted network-level payment models. Methods: A scoping review of the empirical literature was conducted acco…
How Do Shifts in Patients with Mental Health Problems’ Formal and Informal Care Utilization Affect Informal Caregivers
(1) Background: This study investigated how potential shifts in patients' formal and informal care utilization during the COVID-19 pandemic impacted their informal caregivers in terms of their subjective burden, psychological wellbeing, and happiness. (2) Methods: A retrospective cohort study design was employed for a panel of Dutch informal caregivers of persons with mental health problems ( n = 219) in June 2020. Descriptive statistics and diff…
Integrated Payment, Fragmented Realities? A Discourse Analysis of Integrated Payment in the Netherlands
The current models used for paying for health and social care are considered a major barrier to integrated care. Despite the implementation of integrated payment schemes proving difficult, such initiatives are still widely pursued. In the Netherlands, this development has led to a payment architecture combining traditional and integrated payment models. To gain insight into the justification for and future viability of integrated payment, this pa…

Formal and informal care for community‐dwelling frail elderly people over time

Delivering Integrated Care to the Frail Elderly
Integrated working is likely to increase objective burden as it requires professionals to perform additional activities that are largely unrelated to actual patient care. Implications for research and practice are discussed. [Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN05748494]
Effects of an integrated care intervention on frail elderly’s health and quality of life
Introduction: Current care delivery to frail elderly is fragmented; professionals cooperate insufficiently and separately address the complex and diverse needs of frail elderly in the areas of prevention, care, cure, residence and welfare.Integrated care has been promoted as a mean to solve these problems and aims at increasing the effectiveness of care for frail elderly. This study explores the value of an integrated care model for the community-…
The short-term effects of an integrated care model for the frail elderly on health, quality of life, health care use and satisfaction with care
In the short term, the integrated care model had a significant effect on the attachment aspect of quality of life. The frail elderly patients were better able to obtain the love and friendship they desire. The use of care did not differ despite the preventive element and the need for assessments followed up with case management in the integrated care model. In the short term, there were no significant changes in health. As frailty is a progressiv…

The effects of an integrated care model on frail elderly
Organisation of health care for frail elderly is no longer adequate. Their complex requirements within the domains of prevention, care, cure, welfare and residence demand a new care model. Partitions need to be broken down and care-providers should work together on a single, integral basis, from diagnosis to treatment. This type of integrated care model has recently been implemented in the region of Walcheren in the Netherlands
