  • Community Sport and the Politics of Aging

Open Access•Louise Mansfield, Tess Kay et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2019•References: 13

The promotion of physical activity for older people is dominated by biomedically informed polices emphasising the prescription of exercise as medicine and a universal approach to the promotion of active ageing in later life. Yet, more recent research recognises that being physically active in later life is complex and contested, shaped by the intersections of biological, psychological and sociological experiences, and requires differentiated resp…

  • Can food vouchers improve nutrition and reduce health inequalities in low-income mothers and young children

Open Access•Alysha Mcfadden, Josephine M Green et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Our evaluation of the Healthy Start programme in England suggests that a food subsidy programme can provide an important nutritional safety net and potentially improve nutrition for pregnant women and young children living on low incomes. Factors that could compromise this impact include erosion of voucher value relative to the rising cost of food, lack of access to registered retailers and barriers to registering for the programme. Addressing th…

  • The cost of changing physical activity behaviour

    Open Access•Christian E H Boehler, Christian EH Boehler et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Disease register screening is more costly than opportunistic patient recruitment. However, additional costs come with a higher completion rate and better outcomes in terms of behavioural change in patients completing the care pathway. Further research is needed to rigorously evaluate intervention efficiency and to assess the link between behavioural change and changes in quality adjusted life years (QALYs)
