Feelings of Guilt and Remorse After Alcohol Consumption Among People Who Drink at Increasing and Higher‐Risk Levels
Nicotine and tobacco-specific nitrosamine exposure among youth in England who smoke cigarettes and/or vape
Youth who vape are exposed to similar levels of nicotine as those who smoke or who dual use. NNAL exposure among youth who vape is much lower than among those who smoke and indistinguishable from youth who do not vape or smoke
Exploring how an e-cigarette intervention influenced tobacco smoking behaviour in people accessing homelessness services
For people accessing homelessness support centres, smoking abstinence remains challenging. More intensive support and a variety of approaches to support smoking cessation, particularly those which address the psychosocial factors which hinder smoking abstinence, may be required. Future research should focus on how this can be achieved
Paying the price
In the first quarter of 2023, around one in eight adults in Great Britain reported finding it difficult to manage financially and one in fifteen reported having been in rent or mortgage arrears in the past 12 months, with higher rates of financial hardship among disadvantaged groups. However, disadvantage did not appear to compound the psychological impact of financial hardship: people experiencing financial hardship were substantially more likel…
Substance use and homelessness
Findings indicate that various interventions and accommodation models may benefit people who are homeless and using substances. An initiative that combined shelter and basic amenities, pharmacological treatment, psychosocial support, and space where substances were not available and other people using substances could be avoided resulted in an overall reduction in substance use amongst those accommodated
Fire Incidents in a Mental Health Setting
Comprehensive smokefree policies in health care settings can have a positive impact on patients' smoking behaviour, but implementation is impeded by concern that surreptitious smoking may increase fire incidents. We investigated the incidence of routinely reported fire and false alarm incidents in a large mental health organisation in England over an 81-month period when different elements of a smokefree policy were implemented. We used negative …
An observational study of system-level changes to improve the recording of very brief advice for smoking cessation in an inpatient mental health setting
Financial incentives and the recording of incentivised outcomes, the comprehensive smoke-free policy, and the electronic referral system, were associated with increases in recording individual VBA elements, but other changes to the EHCR were not. System-level changes may facilitate staff recording of VBA provision in mental health settings
Mental health, smoking, harm reduction and quit attempts – a population survey in England
About a third of cigarette smokers in England have mental health problems. Interventions should address their increased dependence and leverage higher prevalence of harm reduction behaviours, motivation to stop and attempts to stop smoking
E-Cigarette Regulation in the United States and the United Kingdom
Reducing Smoking Among People With Schizophrenia
Although tobacco smoking is very common among people with schizophrenia and has devastating effects on health, strategies to ameliorate the risk are lacking. Some studies have reported promising results yet quit rates are much lower than in the general population. There is a need to advance research into smoking cessation efforts among people with schizophrenia. We posed the following question to five leading international experts in the field: "…
Adherence therapy following acute exacerbation of schizophrenia
BACKGROUND: Up to 50% of patients with schizophrenia are non-adherent with antipsychotic medication. AIMS: To establish the efficacy of adherence therapy (AT) compared to treatment as usual (TAU) in improving clinical outcomes in patients with schizophrenia following an acute exacerbation of illness. METHOD: A parallel-group, single-blind, randomised controlled trial. Fieldwork was conducted in Thailand. Patients received eight weekly sessions of…
