“What is the essence of cultivating a crop that does not yield enough to feed my family?” Farmer agency and the management of agrobiodiversity in Ghana and Burkina Faso
The preservation of agrobiodiversity is widely regarded as a cornerstone of sustainable agri-food systems, yet dominant narratives often portray crop diversity in smallholder farming as declining under pressures of intensification and market integration. Less attention has been given to how farmers themselves perceive, manage, and actively shape agrobiodiversity over time. Drawing on political ecology and farmer-agency perspectives within a broad…
The sustainability of diets in sub-Saharan Africa
Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) faces unique food security and sustainability challenges. The diets in SSA are insufficient on average, but how they compare across various population segments in terms of nutritional adequacy and environmental footprints is not sufficiently understood. Life cycle assessment (LCA) of diets can be useful, but existing life cycle inventories mostly refer to high-income countries. Hence, data and methodological adjustments a…
Well-Being Under Pressure
BACKGROUND: Psychoactive substance use (PSU) is a growing public health concern, particularly among young adults in high-risk occupations such as artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM). Despite the increasing attention to substance use and its mental health implications globally, limited evidence exists on the patterns and drivers of PSU among young miners in Ghana. AIMS: This study examined the patterns, drivers, and mental health implicat…
Lived Experiences of Nonmedical Use of Tramadol Among Urban Slum-Dwelling Youth in Ghana
The world is witnessing a pharmaceutical opioid crisis, and in Africa's version, the nonmedical use of Tramadol is prevalent in vulnerable populations. However, data on the factors promoting nonmedical use of Tramadol in slums is generally lacking. The study explored the factors that promote the nonmedical use of Tramadol among urban slum-dwelling youth in the Asokore Mampong Municipality, Ghana. This qualitative study recruited 20 nonmedical Tra…
Violence against women and the macroeconomy
Violence against women (VAW) is a widely recognized human rights violation but whose wider economic ramifications are less understood. In this article, applying the multiplier analysis based on 2015 social accounting matrix of Ghana, we outline how the individual microlevel income loss is translated to a macroeconomic loss. We argue that the macroeconomic loss due to VAW, which amounts to about 0.94% of Ghanaian GDP, is not a once‐off loss but a …
How healthy and food secure is the urban food environment in Ghana
The importance of the food environment in influencing dietary choices of consumers has been widely acknowledged, but little attention has been paid to the urban food environment in Africa despite the rise in incidence of obesity and other nutrition-related noncommunicable diseases (NR-NCDs). We contribute to the literature on urban food environments by conducting an observational macro-scan of the food environment in three cities – Accra, Cape Co…
Actor roles and linkages in the agricultural innovation system
Innovation platforms promote interactions among actors in an innovation system. Given the importance of the cocoa sub-sector to the Ghanaian economy, having an innovation platform is imperative for increasing innovative performance. Using qualitative data collection tools we obtained in-depth information on the roles and linkages of actors to provide options for the establishment/strengthening of the cocoa innovation platform in Ghana. Findings f…

Equitable access to health insurance for socially excluded children? The case of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Ghana
Refusal to enrol in Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme
Affordability of full insurance would be a burden on households with low socio-economic status and large household size. Innovative measures are needed to encourage abled households to enrol. Policy should aim at abolishing the registration fee for children, pricing insurance according to socio-economic status of households and addressing the inimical non-financial factors to increase NHIS coverage
Quality of uncomplicated malaria case management in Ghana among insured and uninsured patients
Adherence to the standard protocol of malaria treatment is low. This is especially the case for parasitological confirmation of all suspected malaria patients before treatment with an antimalarial as currently recommended for the effective management of malaria in the country. The results show that about 16 percent of total sample were parasitologically tested. Effective management of the disease demands proper diagnosis and treatment and therefo…
Enrolment of older people in social health protection programs in West Africa - Does social exclusion play a part
Although the population of older people in Africa is increasing, and older people are becoming increasingly vulnerable due to urbanisation, breakdown of family structures and rising healthcare costs, most African countries have no social health protection for older people. Two exceptions include Senegal's Plan Sesame, a user fees exemption for older people and Ghana's National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) where older people are exempt from payi…
