Bringing a health systems modelling approach to complex evaluations
INTRODUCTION: Understanding how to deliver interventions more effectively is a growing emphasis in Global Health. Simultaneously, health system strengthening is a key component to improving delivery. As a result, it is challenging to evaluate programme implementation while reflecting real-world complexity. We present our experience in using a health systems modelling approach as part of a mixed-methods evaluation and describe applications of thes…

Initiation of effective postpartum contraceptive use in public hospitals in Guatemala
The overall frequency of initiation of effective postpartum contraceptive use is low in public hospitals in Guatemala. It is higher, however, in hospitals at lower health care levels with strong community ties. Routine data collection revealed specific areas for improvement, particularly the need to enhance health providers' knowledge of medical eligibility criteria for effective contraceptive use postpartum. The priority is to promote the provis…

Pregnancy-related mortality in Guatemala, 1993-1996
To select the proper interventions that could prevent maternal mortality, adequate and appropriate maternal mortality data are needed. Nevertheless, the quality and quantity of information and the scope of maternal health- and death-related data are inadequate in many countries, particularly in the developing world. From January 1993 to December 1996 a surveillance program in maternal mortality was developed to conduct surveillance studies in the…
Epidemiological differences among birth weight and gestational age subgroups of newborns
For a sample of 16,113 women who received prenatal care from the Guatemalan Social Security Institute Hospital, we described the distribution of birth weight and gestational age subgroups and the association between known epidemiologic risk factors and the odds for 1) an appropriate‐weight‐for‐gestational‐age preterm vs. a small‐for‐gestational‐age term infant, 2) a small‐for‐gestational‐age preterm vs. a small‐for‐gestational‐age term infant, an…
