Mental Health and Cognitive Outcomes in Patients Six Months After Testing Positive Compared with Matched Patients Testing Negative for Covid-19 in a Non-Hospitalized Sample
We aimed to determine the mental health and cognitive outcomes at six months in people who had not been hospitalized with COVID-19 and who had tested positive or negative for COVID-19 in Eastern Ontario, Canada. Participants were matched 1:1 six months following their COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction test. X2, t -test, and Mann-Whitney U tests were conducted to compare self-report and observer-rated mental health and cognitive outcomes between …
The geographic distribution and community correlates of electronic cigarette use in Canada
Sub-provincial data revealed geographical variability in ENDS use across Canada. Localized surveillance and prevention efforts may be improved by considering the community features associated with high rates of use, and benchmarking regional regulations on the advertising and sales of ENDS products to communities with lower estimated rates of use
Developing indicators of age-friendly neighbourhood environments for urban and rural communities across 20 low-, middle-, and high-income countries
This study indicates the extent to which environmental supports for healthy ageing may be less readily available to older adults residing in rural areas and LMIC and augments calls to tailor WHO's existing indicators to a broader range of communities in order to achieve a critical aspect of distributional equity in an ageing world

Milk consumption and childhood anthropometric failure in India
Dairy milk has been shown to contribute to child growth in many countries, but the relationship between milk intake and anthropometric outcomes among Indian children has not been studied. The objectives were to describe children aged 6-59 months who consume dairy milk in India and determine if dairy milk consumption was associated with lower odds of stunting, underweight and anthropometric failure among Indian children. This was a cross-sectional…

The interaction between district-level development and individual-level socioeconomic gradients of cardiovascular disease risk factors in India
Assessing associational strength of 23 correlates of child anthropometric failure
Despite the broad consensus that investments in nutrition-sensitive programmes are required to reduce child undernutrition, in practice empirical studies and interventions tend to focus on few nutrition-specific risk factors in isolation. The 2015-16 National Family Health Survey provides the first opportunity in more than a decade to conduct an up-to-date comprehensive evaluation of the relative importance of various maternal and child health an…
Child anthropometry data quality from Demographic and Health Surveys, Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys, and National Nutrition Surveys in the West Central Africa region

Distinct clusters of stunted children in India
Childhood stunting is often conceptualised as a singular concept (i.e., stunted or not), and such an approach implies similarity in the experiences of children who are stunted. Furthermore, risk factors for stunting are often treated in isolation, and limited research has examined how multiple risk factors interact together. Our aim was to examine whether there are subgroups among stunted children, and if parental characteristics influence the li…
Intergenerational influences on childhood anaemia
Prior research on assessing intergenerational influences on child anaemia has largely approached it from purely maternal perspective. Although there is much merit to focus on that, it is an extremely limited/reductionist view of understanding intergenerational influences. We expanded the intergenerational influences to include the fathers and overall of intergenerational household transfers. We analysed a sample of 19,619 mother-father-offspring …
Trends and correlates of cannabis use in pregnancy
Cannabis use in pregnancy has increased since 2012 in Ontario and was reported in about 2% of pregnancies in 2017. Increases were predominately among women of younger ages and those of lower SES, and these groups account for half of users. Promoting cannabis cessation in pregnancy could lead to improved perinatal and later childhood outcomes and reduce health inequalities
Child anthropometry data quality from Demographic and Health Surveys, Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys, and National Nutrition Surveys in the West Central Africa region
BACKGROUND: There has been limited work comparing survey characteristics and assessing the quality of child anthropometric data from population-based surveys. OBJECTIVE: To investigate survey characteristics and indicators of quality of anthropometric data in children aged 0-59 months from 23 countries in the West Central Africa region. METHODS: Using established methodologies and criteria to examine child age, sex, height, and weight, we conduct…
Relative importance of 13 correlates of child stunting in South Asia
Availability, affordability, and consumption of fruits and vegetables in 18 countries across income levels
BACKGROUND: Several international guidelines recommend the consumption of two servings of fruits and three servings of vegetables per day, but their intake is thought to be low worldwide. We aimed to determine the extent to which such low intake is related to availability and affordability. METHODS: We assessed fruit and vegetable consumption using data from country-specific, validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires in the Prospe…
Wealth and cardiovascular health
Inequality in hypertension management outcomes decreased as countries became richer, but the considerable variation in patterns of wealth-related inequality - even among countries at similar levels of economic development - underscores the importance of health systems in improving hypertension management for all. These findings show that some, but not all, countries, including those with limited resources, have been able to achieve more equitable…

Improving household-level nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive conditions key to reducing child undernutrition in India
Risk factors for chronic undernutrition among children in India
Individual and Ecological Variation in Child Undernutrition in India
Despite the substantial burden of child undernutrition in South Asia, little is known on the relative importance and contribution of individual and micro/macro environments in shaping variation in child undernutrition. Using measures of anthropometry, we decompose the variation in child undernutrition in India to the levels of child, communities and states, quantifying the extent to which variation at each of these levels can be explained by know…
No Female Disadvantage in Anthropometric Status among Children in India
Female disadvantage in child mortality, intra-household allocation of food and coverage of health interventions has been shown to exist in India. At the same time, there has been limited examination of female disadvantage in nutritional status. Using measures of anthropometry and anthropometric failure, we study female disadvantage in child nutritional status from the data collected from the Indian National Family Health Survey (NFHS) undertaken …
Association between coverage of maternal and child health interventions, and under-5 mortality
BACKGROUND: Infant and child mortality rates are among the most important indicators of child health, nutrition, implementation of key survival interventions, and the overall social and economic development of a population. In this paper, we investigate the role of coverage of maternal and child health (MNCH) interventions in contributing to declines in child mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. DESIGN: Data are from 81 Demographic and Health Surveys…
Co-variation in dimensions of smoking behaviour
Demographic and health surveys
Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) are comparable nationally representative household surveys that have been conducted in more than 85 countries worldwide since 1984. The DHS were initially designed to expand on demographic, fertility and family planning data collected in the World Fertility Surveys and Contraceptive Prevalence Surveys, and continue to provide an important resource for the monitoring of vital statistics and population health in…

Gender inequity and age-appropriate immunization coverage in India from 1992 to 2006
BACKGROUND: A variety of studies have considered the affects of India's son preference on gender differences in child mortality, sex ratio at birth, and access to health services. Less research has focused on the affects of son preference on gender inequities in immunization coverage and how this may have varied with time, and across regions and with sibling compositions. We present a systematic examination of trends in immunization coverage in I…
Shared environments
Objective The goal of the present study was to examine the influence of community environment on the nutritional status (weight-for-age and height-for-age) of children (aged 0–59 months) in Bangladesh. In addition, we tested the association between specific characteristics of community environments and child nutritional status. Design Cross-sectional survey. Setting The data are from the nationally representative 2004 Bangladesh Demographic and H…
