Do coping strategies mediate the association between Type D personality and quality of life among people with multiple sclerosis
The aim of this study is to explore whether different coping strategies are able to mediate the association between Type D personality and quality of life. We collected information from 156 consecutive patients (response rate: 72.9%; 75.0% women; median age: 40 ± 3 years). Patients completed the Type D Scale-14, the Coping Self-Efficacy Scale and the Short-Form Health Survey for measuring physical and mental quality of life. The mediating effect …

The aim of this study is to explore whether self-esteem and social participation are associated with the physical and mental quality of life (Physical Component Summary, Mental Component Summary) and whether self-esteem can mediate the association between these variables. We collected information from 118 consecutive multiple sclerosis patients. Age, gender, disease duration, disability status, and participation were significant predictors of Phy…
Regional mortality by socioeconomic factors in Slovakia
Despite the fact that economic growth combined with investments of European structural funds contributed to the improvement of the socioeconomic situation in many districts of Slovakia, there are still districts which remain "poor" and which maintain regional mortality differences
Inequalities in mortality by socioeconomic factors and Roma ethnicity in the two biggest cities in Slovakia
The proportion of Roma is associated with early mortality in the two biggest cities in the Slovak Republic
Effectiveness of a problem-solving based intervention to prolong the working life of ageing workers
The trial is registered with the Dutch Trial Register under number NTR2270
Anemia has a negative impact on self-rated health in kidney transplant recipients with well-functioning grafts
The performance of the K10, K6 and GHQ-12 to screen for present state DSM-IV disorders among disability claimants
The K10 and K6 are reliable and valid scales to screen for present state DSM-IV mental disorder. The optimal cut-off scores are 24 (K10) and 14 (K6). The GHQ-12 (optimal cut-off score: 20) is outperformed by the K10 and K6, which are to be preferred above the GHQ-12. The scores on separate items of the K10 and K6 can be used in disability assessment settings as an agenda for an in-depth follow-up clinical interview to ascertain the presence of pr…
Identifying factors relevant in the assessment of return-to-work efforts in employees on long-term sickness absence due to chronic low back pain
This focus group study shows that 19 factors may be relevant to RTW-ES in sick-listed employees with CLBP. Providing these results to professionals assessing RTW-ES might contribute to a more transparent and systematic approach. Considering the importance of the quality of the RTW process, optimizing the RTW-ES assessment is essential
Exploring factors relevant in the assessment of the return-to-work process of employees on long-term sickness absence due to a depressive disorder
This study shows that 16 factors are relevant in the assessment of RTW-ES in employees sick-listed due to DD. Further research is necessary to expand this knowledge to other health conditions, and to investigate the impact of these results on the quality of the RTW-ES assessment
Type D, anxiety and depression in association with quality of life in patients with Parkinson’s disease and patients with multiple sclerosis
Determinants of social participation of visually impaired older adults
Across the participation domains, perceived importance is a major determinant of social participation among visually impaired older adults. Physical health along with social and psychological status, also affect participation. Knowing how participation is determined can be used to develop rehabilitation interventions to enhance participation of visually impaired older adults
Loneliness and Self-Management Abilities in the Visually Impaired Elderly
The relationship between SMAs (i.e., self-efficacy) and loneliness is promising, as SMAs can be learned through training. Consequently, self-management training may reduce feelings of loneliness
Socioeconomic factors, ethnicity and alcohol-related mortality in regions in Slovakia. What might a tree analysis add to our understanding
Gender and age differences in the recurrence of sickness absence due to common mental disorders
Employees who have been absent from work due to CMDs are at increased risk of recurrent sickness absence due to CMDs and should be monitored after they return to work. The RD was similar in men and in women. In women or = 45 years. In men no age differences were observed
Enhancing a sustainable healthy working life
The trial is registered with the Dutch Trial Register under number NTR2270
Severe Mups in a sick-listed population
The prevalence of severe MUPS is higher in long-term sick-listed employees than in the non-sick- listed working population and at least equals the prevalence in the general practice population. Severe MUPS are associated with psychiatric morbidity and functional impairment and must therefore be specifically recognised as such. Validated questionnaires, such as the PHQ-15, are useful instruments in order to help OHPs to recognise severe MUPS
Social inequalities in changes in health-related behaviour among Slovak adolescents aged between 15 and 19
We confirmed an increase in unhealthy health-related behaviour during adolescence. This increase was related to socioeconomic position, and was more apparent in females
Neuroticism and extraversion in association with quality of life in patients with Parkinson’s disease
Influence of parental employment status on Dutch and Slovak adolescents' health
To conclude briefly our results, father's unemployment seems to be a better predictor of health for Slovak adolescents, father's disablement of health for Dutch ones. Mother's employment status seemed to be important for the self-esteem of Slovak adolescents and mother as a housewife for the health of Dutch ones. This suggests that the link between parental employment status and the health of their children may vary between countries, and therefo…
Prevalence and characteristics of noncompliant behaviour and its risk factors in kidney transplant recipients
Noncompliance with therapy is one possible explanation for the observation that long-term graft survival is not sufficiently improved by the development in immunosuppression. The aim of the study was to explore the prevalence, characteristics and risk factors of noncompliance with immunosuppression. A total of 161 adult kidney transplant recipients were interviewed about their self-rated health, social support, education, stress from adverse effe…

The health status of the labour force in the Netherlands
