Food insecurity is associated with chronic pain and high-impact chronic pain in the USA
Objective: This study evaluated whether food insecurity (US Adult Food Security Survey) was associated with chronic pain (≥ 3 months) and high-impact chronic pain (i.e. pain that limits work and life) among US adults. Design: Cross-sectional analysis. Setting: Nationally representative sample of non-institutionalised adults in the USA. Participants: 79 686 adults from the National Health Interview Survey (2019–2021). Results: Marginal, low and ve…
Epigenetic age acceleration mediates the relationship between neighborhood deprivation and pain severity in adults with or at risk for knee osteoarthritis pain
Syndemics and the etiology of opioid misuse among women
The opioid epidemic remains a public health priority in the United States. There is evidence that women are experiencing disparities within the epidemic, including an earlier onset of prescription opioid misuse and a higher prevalence of child maltreatment, interpersonal violence, and mental health disorders. The purpose of the current study was to explore the social context of opioid misuse initiation among women using a syndemics framework. In-…
Trends and Racial/Ethnic Differences in Health Care Spending Stratified by Gender among Adults with Arthritis in the United States 2011–2019
The purpose of this study was to determine if there were racial/ethnic differences and patterns for individual office-based visit expenditures by gender among a nationally representative sample of adults with arthritis. We retrospectively analyzed pooled data from the 2011 to 2019 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey of adults who self-reported an arthritis diagnosis, stratified by gender (men = 13,378; women = 33,261). Our dependent variable was off…
A qualitative examination of naloxone access in three states
Findings suggest that public health interventions that target naloxone distribution through harm reduction programs can enhance access within local communities. Strategies that address stigmatizing attitudes toward people who use drugs and harm reduction may also facilitate naloxone expansion efforts, overall, as well as policies that improve the affordability and awareness of naloxone through the pharmacy
Barriers to drug treatment in police diversion programs and drug courts
Drug treatment courts and police diversion programs are designed to divert people away from incarceration and into drug treatment. This article explores barriers in linking people who use drugs (PWUD) into drug treatment facilities in urban, suburban, and rural areas of Connecticut, Kentucky, and Wisconsin. Between December 2018 and March 2020, study teams in the three states conducted in-depth, semistructured interviews with key informants invol…
A qualitative examination of substance use disorder treatment-seeking among women with opioid use disorders
Women with opioid use disorders (WWOUD) experience disparities in access to substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, yet the reasons for these differences are unclear. Co-occurring social and structural factors may work synergistically to impede women's treatment-seeking efforts. The current study explored the socio-structural context of SUD treatment-seeking among WWOUD. We used in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 56 women who had misused a…
The Effect of Various Supportive Housing Models on ART Adherence Among Persons Living With HIV in Supportive Housing
BACKGROUND: Providing permanent supportive housing to chronically homeless persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLH) contributes to improved human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) outcomes, including adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). This study seeks to understand whether certain components of housing, namely intensity of case management and specialized HIV housing programs, affects ART adherence for PLH in supportive housing. M…
The comparative effectiveness of different models of permanent supportive housing on problematic substance use, depression, and anxiety symptoms over time
OBJECTIVES: To compare the effectiveness of different models of permanent supportive housing (PSH), housing configuration, and service provision model on substance use, depression, and anxiety symptoms among residents over time. METHODS: Linear mixed model regression was used with 888 residents of PSH to investigate the relationship between supportive housing type, service model, and housing configuration and change in mental health and substance…
