  • Criminal Legal Status and Health

Open Access•Carmen Gutierrez, Meredith Van Natta•ARTICLE•Sociology of Race and Ethnicity•2026

Latina women are increasingly subject to community supervision through probation and parole, and they face distinct exposures to overlapping systems of surveillance. Yet few population-based studies have examined the health of Latina women under community supervision, despite a large body of research focused on the health consequences of criminal legal contact. Drawing on data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), this study ex…

  • Pandemic Communities of Fate and Care Penalties Among Community Outreach Workers in California's Central Valley

    Open Access•Meredith Van Natta, Andrés A Arias et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 46

Existing scholarship has examined community outreach workers' vital role as an essential, effective public health workforce in underserved communities. Less attention has been paid to how such workers have experienced this rhetorically praised yet materially undervalued labour in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on interviews with 43 community outreach workers who facilitated health and well-being services for immigrant communities i…

  • Second-Class Care

    Open Access•Meredith Van Natta•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2025•Referencias: 34

This article examines how U.S. immigration law extends into the health care safety net, enacting medical legal violence that diminishes noncitizens' health chances and transforms clinical practices. Drawing on interviews with health care workers in three U.S. states from 2015 to 2020, I ask how federal citizenship-based exclusions within an already stratified health care system shape the clinical trajectories of noncitizens in safety-net institut…

  • Public charge, legal estrangement, and renegotiating situational trust in the US healthcare safety net

    Open Access•Meredith Van Natta•ARTICLE•Law & Society Review•2023•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 36

US immigration law increasingly excludes many immigrants materially and symbolically from vital safety-net resources. Existing scholarship has emphasized the public charge rule as a key mechanism for enacting these exclusionary trends, but less is known about how recent public charge uncertainty has shaped how noncitizens and healthcare workers negotiate safety-net resources. Drawing on ethnographic observations and interviews with 80 safety-net …

  • Housing Is Health Care

    Open Access•Christoph Hanssmann, Janet K Shim et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology Quarterly•2022•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 41

As medicine integrates social and structural determinants into health care, some health workers redefinehousingas medical treatment. This article discusses how health workers in two U.S. urban safety-net hospitals worked with patients without stable housing. We observed ethnographically how health workers helped patients seek housing in a sharply stratified housing economy. Analyzing in-depth interviews and observations, we show how health worker…

  • What’s in a word? Language and self-assessed health in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

    Open Access•Meredith Van Natta, Z Zimmer•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019•Citada por: 1

This study examines the extent to which the Spanish language influences the way in which respondents report health using the ubiquitous self-assessed health (SAH) outcome. We account for citizenship status, ethnicity, and a series of other covariates. The study uses the 2003-2016 national health and nutrition examination survey (NHANES) (n=39,107). Analyses treat SAH as non-ordered categorical and employ multinomial regressions. Results indicate …

  • "Caring for "Super-utilizers

    Open Access•Mark D Fleming, Janet K Shim et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology Quarterly•2019•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 29

Hospitals throughout the United States are implementing new forms of care delivery meant to address social needs for structurally vulnerable patients as a strategy to prevent emergency department visits and hospitalizations and to thereby reduce costs. This article examines how the deployment of social assistance within a neoliberal institutional logic involves the negotiation and alignment of economistic values with ethics of care. We focus on c…

  • Migration and left-behind parents and children of migrants in Cambodia

    Z Zimmer, Meredith Van Natta•ARTICLE•Asian Population Studies•2018•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 12

This paper examines composition of households formed after the outmigration of a household member in rural Cambodian and correlates household types with indicators of economic condition. The paper focuses on households containing left-behind parents and the children of migrants. Excess mortality in the 1970s due to war suggests the association between migration and economic condition may be gendered. This could be exacerbated when migration leads…

  • Like a Fish out of Water

Open Access•Sara Rubin, Nancy J Burke et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2018•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 32

The subjective nature of pain has always rendered it a point of entry for power and corresponding stratifying processes within biomedicine. The opioid crisis has further exacerbated these challenges by increasing the stakes of prescribing decisions for providers, which in turn has resulted in greater treatment disparities. Using the theoretical frame of cultural health capital (CHC) to account for these disparities in pain management as they unfo…

  • Complex care and contradictions of choice in the safety net

    Open Access•Meredith Van Natta, Nancy J Burke et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2018•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 3

This article explores the complicated and often-contradictory notions of choice at play in complex care management (CCM) programmes in the US healthcare safety net. Drawing from longitudinal data collected over two years of ethnographic fieldwork at urban safety-net clinics, our study examines the CCM goal of transforming frequent emergency department (ED) utilisers into 'active' patients who will reduce their service utilisation and thereby cont…
