Jewish populations in the censuses of civil-military order commissions. Problems and research opportunities
Women and the Polish-Lithuanian Army
The article describes the presence of women in the armies of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. These armed forces differed from the European military as there was a small proportion of women accompanying the soldiers. The differences did not disappear until the following century. The duties normally performed by women were fulfilled by ‘camp servants’, and military law strongly foug…
Mosaic Database
This paper looks at the progress that the Mosaic database has enabled in the study of family structures in continental Europe in the past. Our main argument is that the combination of comprehensive archival research, digitization and computation, data mining, and open-access dissemination that is at the core of the Mosaic project is bringing about an important shift in the fundamental principles that have driven European family history research t…
European Family Patriarchy in the Past and Contemporary Developmental Inequalities
This paper aims to show that contemporary developmental outcomes in Europe vary with historical patterns of age and gender inequality. It builds on the authors' earlier work constructing the Patriarchy Index (PI), which measures age and gender inequality within households based on historical census data. The claimed relationships are tested in a regression framework in which the outcome variables are a set of development indicators (GDP per capit…
Religious Freedom in Mixed Denomination Marriages in the Polish-Ruthenian (Ukrainian/Belarusian) Cultural Borderland at the Turn of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries
This article analyzes the phenomenon of mixed marriages in the areas belonging to Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth whose society was religiously and ethnically diversified. Special attention is paid to the cultural Polish-Ruthenian borderland in two regional contexts: Polish-Ukrainian and Polish-Belarusian, whose population was Roman Catholic (a minority) and the majority Greek Catholic. Based on the census like material, we found that the househol…
Overcoming the crisis

Wśród nich najważniejsze były zmiany w systemie podatkowym i sposobie zarządzania domeną monarszą. Nadzwyczaj…
The influence of emancipation reforms on the Polish rural family in western provinces of the Russian Empire in the second half of the 19th century
Do all storks fly to Africa? Universal statements and the generic overgeneralization effect
Making a Place for Space
Much of the previous scholarship on the historical living arrangements of the aged has taken place without the benefit of large-scale harmonised census microdata and did not embrace even rudimentary forms of spatial modelling. Drawing on the pooled cross-sectional census microdata from the North Atlantic Population and Mosaic projects, we derive measures of intergenerational co-residence among the elderly for 277 regional populations from Catalon…
One size does not fit all”
The extent of elderly residential isolation from kin varied considerably between European historical societies, but few attempts have been made to understand these patterns systematically across space. So far, large‐scale accounts of factors underlying these patterns have calibrated a global model based on a single regression equation, thus implicitly assuming that the relationships between elderly living arrangements and their correlates are spa…
Historical family systems and contemporary developmental outcomes
Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in the role of the historical family as the instigator of disparate developmental trajectories. However, a major challenge faced by these studies was that they had to work around a lack of reliable historical data. This study demonstrates how embarking on the recent outburst of historical microdata infrastructures may help to improve these explorations by suggesting additional statistics and a derive…
Age heaping patterns in Mosaic data
This paper analyzes the extent and nature of age-misreporting in the Mosaic data, currently one of the largest historical census microdata infrastructures for continental Europe. We use demographic measures known as the age heaping indexes to explore regional, periodic and sex-specific patterns of age misreporting across 115 Mosaic regional datafiles, from Catalonia to Moscow, during Europe's demographic ancien régime and thereafter. The paper's …
The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth as a Laboratory for Analysing Connections between Confessions, the Demographic Regime, and Human Capital
Religion played a key role in the normative systems of early modern societies. This article is an introduction to a more extensive project, in which we will conduct a historical analysis of the role of religion in economic, demographic, and civilizational growth. We believe that the sources that have survived from the early modern period provide ample data to allow for quantitative studies on this subject. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth appea…
The Patriarchy Index
This article presents a new measure of family-driven age- and gender-related inequalities. This composite measure, which we call the Patriarchy Index, combines a range of variables related to familial behavior that reflect varying degrees of sex- and age-related social inequality across different family settings. We demonstrate the comparative advantages of the index by showing how 266 historical populations from the Atlantic coast of Europe to M…
Zróżnicowanie majątkowe mieszkańców Grodna w 1794 roku
The primary goal of this article is to analise the wealth distribution of inhabitants of Grodno in year 1794. Wealth’s inequality among city’s household was high with Gini coefficient 0.77. Since Grodno population was almost equally divided between Christians and Jews, statistical analysis allows comparisons between those two subpopulations.Although arithmetic mean suggests similar economic situation of both religious groups, analysis of medians …
