Race, Erasure, and Skin Cancer Prevention Guidelines
Despite disproportionate mortality rates for Black skin cancer patients, medical education and practice guidelines center White bodies and fair skin. How did dark skin become such a deadly dermatological blind spot
Dream like the Whites
A burgeoning body of scholarship addresses how low-income first generation (LIFG) college students, across racial groups, navigate communication with their families about their experiences of class-based dissonance at socioeconomically elite institutions. Yet, there is scant corollary research addressing how LIFG students of color navigate communication with their families regarding experiences of racial dissonance and racism on campuses that are…
Meso-Level Racism in Medicine
This article highlights that the standardization of medical care in the U.S. relies on clinical practice guidelines (CPGs), which indicate institutionalized norms about when and under what circumstances it is appropriate to administer specific medical tests and courses of treatment. However, when CPGs in medicine derive from medical research that was informed by since-debunked ideas about race, they may also facilitate structural racism

Surviving Dangerous Waters
In an analysis based upon an original cartoon image by artist Michael Scalzo, this sociological essay proposes an allegory of critical consciousness within the context of our contemporary sociocultural landscape. Likening the role of critical consciousness to that of an oxygen tank for a fish surrounded by polluted water, I draw upon theoretical literature engaging critical epistemological and pedagogical praxis, as well as Marxist, critical race…
Clearing the Path for First-Generation College Students
"This collection explores social processes and meanings germane to the educational mobility of first-generation college students before and during their matriculation into higher education. The contributing scholars examine dynamics, policies, practices, and programs that inform college access and persistence for first generation students"
White Supremacist Danger Narratives
Ashley C. Rondini on the scripts justifying and reinforcing supremacy
Legacies of Racial Contention
This paper focuses on the ways in which past racial contention shapes possibilities for contemporary civic action focused on youth education. Drawing on the recently legislated Civil Rights/Human Rights Education curriculum in Mississippi-a state with an exceptionally charged history of racial contention-we identify barriers to curricular implementation in Mississippi public schools and draw on case studies of initiatives in two communities that …
[Mis]Placing Race in Biomedical Clinical Context
Notions of racial categories as biologically significant remain persistently salient to oppressive hegemonic ideas about race, despite scientific evidence to the contrary. Biomedical and epidemiological researchers are both professionally socialized and institutionally mandated to utilize racial categories in their research design, implementation, and interpretation processes, under the premise that doing so can facilitate the development of meas…
Healing the Hidden Injuries of Class? Redemption Narratives, Aspirational Proxies, and Parents of Low‐Income, First‐Generation College Students
Existing scholarship has examined how low‐income individuals conceptualize their socioeconomically constrained positions in relation to the meritocratic ideologies and stratified mobility structures of the United States, but little is specifically known about how these individuals' ideas regarding their own status may be impacted by raising children who surpass their educational and occupational achievement levels. Drawing on interview data from …
Observations of Critical Consciousness Development in the Context of Service Learning
This paper explores dynamics of students’ critical consciousness development in the context of a thematically organized service-learning sociology course titled Health, Illness, and Community. The integrated components of the course were designed to cultivate critical consciousness by framing the study of health in terms of social justice issues that were demonstrable across three community partner organization sites. Analyses of writing assignme…
