Exposure to negative stereotypes impairs older adults’ self-control
The present studies were designed to test the hypothesis that exposure to negative stereotypes about older adults impairs older adults’ self-control as measured with a delay discounting task. Participants (ages 65–77) were assigned to read either a positive or negative article on the cognitive effects of aging (Study 1 and 2) or were assigned to a neutral control condition (Study 2). Older adults in the negative article condition chose delayed re…

Revulsion and awe
The spirit of capitalism shifted throughout the twentieth century, Boltanski and Chiapello place it sometime in the period between the 1960s and 1990s [2005, The New Spirit of Capitalism, Verso, London], for Bell it had happened by the mid-1970s and its contradictions were already apparent [1998, The Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism, Basic Books, New York]. David Harvey is more specific and cites 1979 as the dawn of the new era [2005, The Ne…
Neoconservatism, bohemia and the moral economy of neoliberalism
This paper is concerned with the moral economy of neoliberalism. The goal is to show the development of this moral economy through the discourse of neoconservatism. The research pays particular attention to the incorporation of aspects of bohemia in the construction of this moral economy. The paper charts the development of the neoconservative moral critique of political modernity in the second half of the twentieth century by drawing on the lead…
I want your sex
Openness and self-exploration have been associated with myriad benefits. Within the realm of sexuality, sexual exploration may be 1 facet of openness and self-exploration that yields benefits. Prior literature suggests that such exploration may have benefits for sexual orientation minority persons, though limited research has investigated the benefits of sexual exploration for heterosexuals. The present study used data from 346 adult women (185 e…
Dictionary of Probation and Offender Management
Contemporary probation practice is developing rapidly and is become increasingly professionalized. Probation officers are typically described now as offender managers, and the creation of NOMS (National Offender Management Service) has broadened the remit of the Probation Service. As well as bringing an increased emphasis on skills and qualifications it has also introduced a new set of ideas and concepts into the established probation lexicon - i…

A World of Business to Do
T THE empire that England built between i65i and I775 was a new kind of empire, significantly larger than the conglomerate that came to be known as Great Britain. It was global, combining territory as far east as India and as far west as America. At the same time, it was commercial, regulated from i65I onward through a series of mercantile laws, known as the Navigation Acts, that sought to reassert control over trade with English America after th…

Imperatives, Behaviors, and Identities
This work brings together 16 essays in cultural history. Taken together, the essays aim to provide a reassessment of the complex process of cultural adjustment among the settler societies of colonial British and revolutionary America. Imperatives, Behaviors, and Identities looks at aspects of the formation and development of English, or, after 1707, British-American cultural spaces during the colonial and revolutionary eras. It focuses on the spe…

The Privileges of Independence
In this volume, John Crowley argues that the US colonies' successful revolt did not mean they wished to end their privileged commercial dependence on Great Britain. From the 1760s through the mid-1790s, in fact, Anglo-American political economists grappled with the transistion from a de jure to a de facto economic dependence of the new states on their former mother country. Crowley shows that the Revolutionaries were not principled free-traders a…
