Meta-analysis-synthesis (MAS): From discursive and representational meta-studies to the becoming of matter
Parents despite support networks? An intersectional analysis of disabled parenthood
This article uses an intersectional perspective that considers patriarchal and ableist mandates to understand how family and professional support networks impact the reproductive trajectories of disabled people. The study analyzes 16 semi‐structured interviews with disabled people and 1 with a non‐disabled support worker. Thematic analysis of the empirical material identifies two main themes. Firstly, supporting the desire to mother at the inters…
Risk and decision-making: Communication between health professionals and pregnant women at risk of preeclampsia in Catalonia
The biomedical model of attention focuses on preventive risk assessment to mitigate the apparition of future diseases. In the event of a pregnancy classified "at risk" of preeclampsia, screening undertaken in first-term ultrasound controls determines which patients receive preventive treatment. This article examines women's narratives on the communication dynamics with health professionals by drawing on an eight-month ethnographic fieldwork, betw…

Latin American Perspectives on Parenthood and Disability: Vulnerability, Risk, and Social Inclusion
Despite the growing recognition and acceptance of disabled people’s sexuality, there are barriers to parenthood anchored in metaphors of vulnerability and risk. The social inclusion of disabled parents seems both desirable and risky, making disabled parenthood one of the current frontiers of inclusion for the disabled body. The interest in disabled parenting in Anglo-Saxon academic literature has barely been considered related to Latin American p…
The methodological and epistemic narrative of narrative productions
The empiricism underlying the research techniques developed in the context of the discursive turn of the late 1980s opened up various polemics during the 1990s on the practice of critical research. This effervescence led in the 2000s to the development and consolidation of Narrative Production Methodology as a qualitative research technique in the Catalan academic and activist context. Its grounding in feminist epistemology and dialogism provides…
Cultural transformation of university social work curricula: Black Lives Matter and the Spanish colonial past
The Spanish colonial past permeates the institutions of higher education, configuring the contents and forms of disciplinary knowledge production that constitute it, as is the case of social work. In this article, we visit different scenarios where colonial memories are disputed in the context of the commemorations of 12 October (also called ‘Hispanic Day’ or ‘Race Day’) in Barcelona. Although multiple articulations of anti-racist movements, such…
A methodological proposal from situated knowledge epistemology: Narrative Productions
The Narrative Productions’ Methodology emerges from Haraway’s epistemological and political concept of “situated knowledges”. According to this perspective, all knowledge emerges from semiotic and material conditions that give rise to a specific gaze, which diverges from both a gaze “from nowhere” – realism – and a gaze “from everywhere” – relativism. Unlike realist and relativist perspectives, the Narrative Productions’ Methodology reintroduces …
Articulations and controversies in sex-work trans-activism
Beatriz Espejo has worked in Barcelona as a trans-sex-worker since the 1980s, and in 1993 she founded the CTC, one of the leading activist organisations in the Spanish trans movement during the ’00s. The CTC had a direct impact on the definition of the Spanish law on gender identity. Although it may seem like a success story, this activist articulation has been conflicted and complicated: alliances between multiple and divergent political positio…
Putting emotions to work: The role of affective disablism and ableism in the constitution of the dis/abled subject
By conceptually framing disability under the lens of the Foucauldian apparatus, this article applies dis/ability studies to examine the constitution of the disabled subject by exploring how ableism and other axes of oppression (such as ageism and heterosexism) intersect in everyday situations of affective disablism. The article illustrates these processes using four narrative productions with men and women who are disability rights activists or c…
Bordering, exclusions and necropolitics
Purpose Contemporary governmentality combines biopolitical and necropolitical logics to establish social, political and physical borders that classify and stratify populations using symbolic and material marks as, for example, nationality, gender, ethnicity, race, sexuality, social class and/or disability. The social sciences have been prolific in the analysis of alterities and, in turn, implicated in the epistemologies and knowledge practices th…
Retracted: National construction and LGBTI rights: Exploring Catalan homonationalism
Homonationalism offers a conceptual framework that allows us to understand the assimilation of the struggle for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) rights by national exception
Occupational Therapy: Autonomy, Governmentality and Subjectification
This paper explores Occupational Therapy (OT) interventions using a dialogical perspective with therapists and people with functional diversity.[1] Framing the dialogue between the discourses that participate in the therapeutic process, the paper reflexively explores the interferences in the forms of subjectivity that the discipline promotes under the governmental umbrella. The research uses ethnographic and narrative material as the basis of its…
Articulatory research and gender technological agencements: The case “Generatch”
Constructionist perspectives, at considering social reality as a product of discursive practices, considered that it is possible and necessary to transform our current state of affairs. This understanding leads to a revitalization of politics. At the same time, the difficulty at defining a clear foundation for political action has lead to a new post-constructionist landscape where political action becomes a central element, despite the emphasis i…
The knowledge factory: In/corporation of cognitive capitalism in the university
The large-scale changes that are happening in the global context are permeating every area of contemporary life. University institutions are not immune to these changes and are becoming articulated within a unique logic, creating new "cultures" related to the production of knowledge and training. This material-semiotic framework seeks to reproduce itself through particular assemblages strongly imposed on the subjects involved, leaving little room…
Constructions of Sexual Relationships: A Study of the Views of Young people in Catalunia, England and Slovakia and their Health Implications
Q methodology was applied to investigate the views of young people from Catalunia, England and Slovakia regarding sexual relationships and their health implications. The Q sorts of 188 16-18-year-olds from these three diverse European regions were reduced by Q factor analysis to six clear accounts. These accounts are presented in relation to three emergent themes: (a) traditionalism/liberalism; (b) locus of responsibility; and (c) the relationshi…
