Community engagement as a foundation for implementation research for group psilocybin assisted therapy in New Mexico
Informed by a community engagement process, we have developed a pragmatic, open-label, hybrid feasibility-implementation study of Group Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy (GPAT) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As psychedelic-assisted therapies begin to enter the broader mental health arena, engaging communities in the design of research and care models is essential to ensuring that those most impacted have access to—and trust in—the treatment…
Characteristics and mental health of psychedelic mushroom and multi-psychedelic users relative to non-psychedelic users in American adults, 2020–2021
This paper extends previous work describing the association between psychedelic use and mental health, controlling for confounding mental health factors such as comorbid anxiety and depression. These results suggest psychedelic users may have poorer mental health than their non-using counterparts in certain contexts and emphasize the need for future research in this field. Both non-adjusted and adjusted analyses demonstrate lower mental health sc…
Assessing readiness for implementation of psychedelic-assisted mental health therapy, in low- and middle-income countries
Mental health disorders (MHD) rank among the top 10 global causes of disease burden, with significant economic and social costs. Current treatments often have limited efficacy or tolerability, and there has been little recent innovation in treatments. In the past decade, clinical research on Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies (PAT) for treating MHD has increased in high-income countries, while most MHD burdens are in low and middle-income countries. …
Cost-effectiveness of a pediatric operating room installation in Sub-Saharan Africa
The unmet need for pediatric surgery imposes enormous health and economic consequences globally, predominantly shouldered by Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where children comprise almost half of the population. Lack of knowledge about the economic impact of improving pediatric surgical infrastructure in SSA inhibits the informed allocation of limited resources towards the most cost-effective interventions to bolster global surgery for children. We asse…
Group psychedelic therapy
Adopting group therapy protocols where feasible would significantly reduce the cost of psychedelic-assisted therapies. By enhancing the number of patients served per clinician, group therapy could also ameliorate the anticipated shortage of appropriately trained clinicians, thereby accelerating access to these promising new therapies
Developing the Global Health Cost Consortium Unit Cost Study Repository for HIV and TB
Consistently defined, accurate, and easily accessible cost data are a valuable resource to inform efficiency analyses, budget preparation, and sustainability planning in global health. The Global Health Cost Consortium (GHCC) designed the Unit Cost Study Repository (UCSR) to be a resource for standardised HIV and TB intervention cost data displayed by key characteristics such as intervention type, country, and target population. To develop the UC…
Thresholds for the cost–effectiveness of interventions
Many countries use the cost-effectiveness thresholds recommended by the World Health Organization's Choosing Interventions that are Cost-Effective project (WHO-CHOICE) when evaluating health interventions. This project sets the threshold for cost-effectiveness as the cost of the intervention per disability-adjusted life-year (DALY) averted less than three times the country's annual gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. Highly cost-effective in…
Are long-lasting insecticide-treated bednets and water filters cost-effective tools for delaying HIV disease progression in Kenya
BACKGROUND: Co-infection with malaria and other infectious diseases has been shown to increase viral load and accelerate HIV disease progression. A recent study in Kenya demonstrated that providing long-lasting insecticide-treated bednets (LLIN) and water filters (WF) to HIV-positive adults with CD4 >350 cells/mm(3) significantly reduced HIV progression. DESIGN: We conducted a cost analysis to estimate the potential net financial savings gained b…
Reassessing HIV Prevention
The largest investments in AIDS prevention targeted to the general population are being made in interventions where the evidence for large-scale impact is uncertain.
Cost-effectiveness of tuberculosis evaluation and treatment of newly-arrived immigrants
Background Immigrants to the U.S. are required to undergo overseas screening for tuberculosis (TB), but the value of evaluation and treatment following entry to the U.S. is not well understood. We determined the cost-effectiveness of domestic follow-up of immigrants identified as tuberculosis suspects through overseas screening. Methods Using a stochastic simulation for tuberculosis reactivation, transmission, and follow-up for a hypothetical coh…
HIV prevention programmes for female sex workers in Andhra Pradesh, India
The HIV prevention efforts in this Indian state would benefit from standardisation of the highly variable services provided by peer educators, who form an important part of the sex worker programmes. The cost per sex worker served decreases with increasing number of sex workers served annually, but this has to be weighed against an associated modest trend of decrease in time spent with each sex worker in some programmes
A saga in international HIV policy modeling
Cost-effectiveness of the female condom in preventing HIV and STDs in commercial sex workers in rural South Africa
