  • Effect of Grandmaternal Smoking on Body Size and Proportions at Birth

Open Access•Isabell Katharina Rumrich, Osmo Hänninen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Many long-term adverse effects of smoking during pregnancy are known. Increasingly, adverse effects in the grandchild after grandmaternal smoking during pregnancy are reported. We explored this in a birth cohort of 24,000 grandmother-mother-child triads identified from the Finnish Medical Birth Register in 1991-2016. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the association between any smoking during pregnancy by both grandmother and mothe…

  • Residential Wood Combustion in Finland: PM2.5 Emissions and Health Impacts with and without Abatement Measures

Open Access•Mikko Savolahti, Heli Lehtomäki et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Exposure to fine particles in ambient air has been estimated to be one of the leading environmental health risks in Finland. Residential wood combustion is the largest domestic source of fine particles, and there is increasing political interest in finding feasible measures to reduce those emissions. In this paper, we present the PM 2.5 emissions from residential wood combustion in Finland, as well as the resulting concentrations. We used populat…

  • Health Impacts of Ambient Air Pollution in Finland

Open Access•Heli Lehtomäki, Antti Korhonen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Air pollution has been estimated to be one of the leading environmental health risks in Finland. National health impact estimates existing to date have focused on particles (PM) and ozone (O3). In this work, we quantify the impacts of particles, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in 2015, and analyze the related uncertainties. The exposures were estimated with a high spatial resolution chemical transport model, and adjusted to observed concentrati…

  • On the Development of Health-Based Ventilation Guidelines: Principles and Framework

Open Access•Paolo Carrer, Eduardo de Oliveira Fernandes et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

This paper summarizes the results of HealthVent project. It had an aim to develop health-based ventilation guidelines and through this process contribute to advance indoor air quality (IAQ) policies and guidelines. A framework that allows determining ventilation requirements in public and residential buildings based on the health requirements is proposed. The framework is based on three principles: 1. Criteria for permissible concentrations of sp…

  • The Matex cohort – a Finnish population register birth cohort to study health effects of prenatal exposures

Open Access•Isabell Katharina Rumrich, Kirsi Vähäkangas et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

The MATEX cohort consists of 1.75 million mother-child pairs with a maximum follow up time of 29 years. This makes the cohort big enough to reach sufficient statistical power to investigate rare outcomes, such as birth anomalies, childhood cancers, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The linkage between different registers allows for an extension of the scope of the cohort and a follow up from the prenatal period to decades later in life

  • Perceived Indoor Environment and Occupants’ Comfort in European “Modern” Office Buildings: The Officair Study

Open Access•Ioannis Sakellaris, Dikaia Saraga et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Indoor environmental conditions (thermal, noise, light, and indoor air quality) may affect workers' comfort, and consequently their health and well-being, as well as their productivity. This study aimed to assess the relations between perceived indoor environment and occupants' comfort, and to examine the modifying effects of both personal and building characteristics. Within the framework of the European project OFFICAIR, a questionnaire survey …

  • Future Premature Mortality Due to O3, Secondary Inorganic Aerosols and Primary PM in Europe — Sensitivity to Changes in Climate, Anthropogenic Emissions, Population and Building Stock

Open Access•Camilla Geels, Camilla Andersson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015

Air pollution is an important environmental factor associated with health impacts in Europe and considerable resources are used to reduce exposure to air pollution through emission reductions. These reductions will have non-linear effects on exposure due, e.g., to interactions between climate and atmospheric chemistry. By using an integrated assessment model, we quantify the effect of changes in climate, emissions and population demography on exp…

  • Environmental Asthma Reduction Potential Estimates for Selected Mitigation Actions in Finland Using a Life Table Approach

Open Access•Isabell Katharina Rumrich, Isabell Rumrich et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015

The adjustment of environmental exposures can reduce the asthma burden in Finland by up to 10

  • Relation between commuting, leisure time physical activity and serum lipids in a Chinese urban population

Open Access•Gang Hu, Heikki Pekkarinen et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2001

The present study showed a significant association between serum lipids and commuting physical activity, but no relation with leisure time sports

  • Effects of eating an uncooked vegetable diet for 1 week

Open Access•Osmo Hänninen, Mikko Nenonen et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•1992•Cited by: 4•References: 15

  • Finnish Healthy Village Study: Health profile analysis for local health promotion

Open Access•Esko Kumpusalo, Liisa Neittaanmäki et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•1991

Finnish Healthy Village Study started in 1981 as an innovative local level health promotion project in a small Syvänniemi village in North Savo, Middle-Eastern Finland. In 1986, health profile analysis was carried out in four villages in North Savo. Altogether, 793 people working age (20–64 years) participated in the first health profile analysis. Low education level, lack of social support, strenuous work, fatty food and lack of physical exercis…
