  • Asthma disparities in the prevalence, morbidity, and treatment of Latino children

  • Adolescent Risk-Takers

    Open Access•Ian R H Rockett, Anthony Spirito et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•1991

Adolescence is a developmental stage characterized by excessive risk-taking behavior that produces adverse health effects, typically in the form of injury. At issue is whether adolescent suicide attempters and injured adolescent motor vehicle drivers constitute a common risk group and are differentiated by the response of the emergency medical care system and by case disposition. Data originated in the medical records of a Rhode Island (USA) trau…

  • Use of the risk-rescue rating scale with adolescent suicide attempters

Anthony Spirito, Larry K Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•1991•Cited by: 2

The assessment of the medical lethality and intent of suicide attempts has been considered an important area of research for those interested in suicide. The current study examined the usefulness of the Risk-Rescue Rating Scale with 109 adolescent suicide attempters and found a restricted range of variability, which, in turn, resulted in poor interrater reliability on a number of items. Results suggest that the Risk-Rescue Rating Scale is of limi…

  • Patterns of response to childhood asthma

    Gregory K Fritz, James C Overholser•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1989

The present study was designed to evaluate the concordance between parental and child ratings of asthma symptoms, and to determine the relationship between symptom ratings and morbidity data. The sample consisted of 162 asthmatic children from various treatment settings and 105 parents. The symptom pattern assessment employed a modified-for-children version of the Asthma Symptom Checklist (CASCL), which was completed independently by the parent a…

  • After treatment ends

    Gregory K Fritz, Judith R Williams et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1988•References: 6

Fifty-two survivors of childhood cancer and their families were assessed by questionnaire and interview to determine survivors' psychosocial status two years or more after treatment. Most were functioning well and serious psychosocial problems were relatively rare. Communication patterns during treatment were most predictive of psychosocial outcome whereas indicators of medical severity were least predictive. The heterogeneity of effective coping…

  • Defense style and the perception of asthma

    H Steiner, C M Higgs et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1987

Approximately 15% of patients with bronchial asthma are unable to sense marked changes in airway obstruction. We have investigated the hypothesis that inability to sense changes in the severity of bronchial asthma varies with insensitivity to emotional arousal, which in turn is associated with repressive defense styles. Nine asthmatic patients were studied comparing actual changes in peak flow rate using a coded peak flow meter and in arousal dur…

  • Psychological factors in fatal childhood asthma

Gregory K Fritz, Steven Rubinstein et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1987•References: 19

A review of three recent cases of death due to childhood asthma revealed consistent themes of depression, emotional precipitation of attacks, unsupportive families, and a tendency to deny asthma symptoms. Possible psychosomatic mechanisms are identified as potentially important for the interaction of emotions and asthma

  • Goal-setting behavior of asthmatic, diabetic and healthy children

    Open Access•Jomary Hilliard, Jomary P Hilliard et al.•ARTICLE•Child Psychiatry & Human…•1982

  • Enuresis
