  • A comparison of traumatic injury characteristics in rural and urban adults living in Wisconsin

Open Access•K J Kallies, William J Koehne et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2025

PURPOSE: Rural compared to urban populations have higher age-adjusted injury mortality rates. We sought to describe differences in traumatic injury mechanisms, severity, and mortality in Wisconsin adults in rural and urban areas. METHODS: State trauma registry data were analyzed for adult patients injured in 2021-2022. The Wisconsin Health Innovation Program's rural and urban classification scheme, consisting of urban advantaged, urban, urban und…

  • Social and environmental adversity predict poor mental health in a Milwaukee, WI community sample

    Open Access•C W Tomas, Sydney C Timmer-Murillo et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2025•References: 42

  • Sex-related disparities in vehicle crash injury and hemodynamics

Open Access•Susan Cronn, Karthik Somasundaram et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Objective Multiple studies evaluate relative risk of female vs. male crash injury; clinical data may offer a more direct injury-specific evaluation of sex disparity in vehicle safety. This study sought to evaluate trauma injury patterns in a large trauma database to identify sex-related differences in crash injury victims. Methods Data on lap and shoulder belt wearing patients age 16 and up with abdominal and pelvic injuries from 2018 to 2021 wer…

  • Examining the role of social vulnerability, neighborhood characteristics, and geospatial patterns of firearm-related injuries and clinical outcomes in Milwaukee county

    Open Access•C W Tomas, Sydney C Timmer-Murillo et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2024•References: 41

In Milwaukee County, firearm injury patients are injured in and often return to the same disadvantaged neighborhoods that may hamper recovery. Results replicate and expand previous work and implicate specific socioenvironmental factors for intervention and prevention of firearm injury

  • Neural processes of emotional conflict detection and prediction of posttraumatic stress disorder symptom clusters in traumatic injury survivors

    Kaley Davis, C W Tomas et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2023

Neural processes of emotion conflict detection measured in the early aftermath of a potentially traumatic event are useful as predictors for the development of PTSD symptoms. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Scoring the Life Events Checklist

Open Access•C W Tomas, Carissa Weis et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2021

One method to balance the predictive strength of experienced events and the excellent reliability of a total LEC score, is to adopt the newly proposed weighted score. Future use of this weighted scoring method can provide a comprehensive estimate of lifetime trauma exposure while still emphasizing the direct proximity of experienced events compared with other degrees of exposure. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
