  • Holocene vegetation dynamics of the Koobi Fora Basin, East Turkana, Kenya

    Open Access•Rahab Kinyanjui, Husna K Mashaka et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026•References: 65

The Koobi Fora Basin is renowned for its rich paleontological and archaeological record. Despite extensive study of earlier periods the Holocene (∼11,7000 years ago to present) sedimentary record, the Galana Boi Formation, remains understudied. This Formation preserves a record of lake-level fluctuation, environmental shifts, and the appearance of the first herders in eastern Africa around ∼5000 years ago. Here we examine Holocene vegetation chan…

  • Ecomorphology in Kenya's Koobi Fora Formation

    Open Access•Megan Malherbe, Nicole M Webb et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2025•References: 133

This research presents a new method of ecological morphology (ecomorphology) analysis using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics to quantify shape variation in extant bovid metapodials with known habitat preferences. Extant data were used to create a model for classifying bones into distinct habitat categories and to test functional hypotheses related to locomotor behavior in different habitats. The model was then applied to fossils from the…

  • Mobility ideation due to water problems during historic 2022 drought associated with livestock wealth, water and food insecurity, and fingernail cortisol concentration in northern Kenya

    Open Access•Asher Y Rosinger, Justin Stoler et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2024•Cited by: 6•References: 56

  • The co-occurrence of water insecurity and food insecurity among Daasanach pastoralists in northern Kenya

    Open Access•Hilary J Bethancourt, Zane S Swanson et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2023

Objective: Water plays a critical role in the production of food and preparation of nutritious meals, yet few studies have examined the relationship between water and food insecurity. The primary objective of this study, therefore, was to examine how experiences of household water insecurity (HWI) relate to experiences of household food insecurity (HFI) among a pastoralist population living in an arid, water-stressed region of northern Kenya. Des…

  • Mobility and Subsistence Patterns among Mid-Holocene Pastoralists in East Africa

    Emmanuel Ndiema, Emmanuel K Ndiema•CHAPTER•2020

Pastoralism in eastern Africa was characterized by a form of niche broadening and diversification when viewed within the context of mobility and subsistence patterns. In East Africa, Pastoral Neolithic cultures entail those groups who herded domesticated animals and used stone tools and ceramics as part of their subsistence package. Climatic and demographic pressures after 6,000 bp pushed Neolithic pastoralists living in the Nile River Valley sou…

  • Paleoenvironmental context of archaeological sites, implications for subsistence strategies under Holocene climate change, northern Kenya

    Open Access•Gail M Ashley, Emmanuel Ndiema et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2011•Cited by: 11•References: 21

The Holocene was time of dramatic climate change in East Africa, shifting from wetter climate in the Early–Mid Holocene (∼10–5ka) to drier climates in the Late Holocene, followed by a slight reversal at <1ka. The Holocene was a time of cultural change from hunter‐gatherer and fishing to pastoralism. Recent excavations along the eastern shores of Lake Turkana, Kenya (4°N) provide new archaeological materials, a high‐resolution stratigraphic and pa…
