  • The Ethics of Price Variation

    Open Access•William A Jackson•ARTICLE•Forum for Social Economics•2022•References: 18

Orthodox price theory turns on flexible prices that move frequently to maintain market-clearing equilibrium. Fixed prices are a source of market imperfections and failures. In the traditional ethics of pricing, by contrast, prices should be set at a just norm and stay there, with only rare amendments. The current paper examines these attitudes to price variation and finds them inadequate: orthodox economics is too supportive of continual price ch…

  • Distributive Justice With and Without Culture

    William A Jackson•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Economy•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 61

Academic treatments of distributive justice normally adopt a static approach centred on resource allocation among a set of individual agents. The resulting models, expressed in mathematical language, make no allowance for culture, as they never engage with the society’s way of life or the moulding of individuals within society. This paper compares the static approach to distributive justice with a cultural one, arguing that a case for redistribut…

  • Retirement Policies and the Life Cycle: Current Trends and Future Prospects

    William A Jackson•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2009•References: 13

During the 20th century, pensions in developed countries were generally payable from a statutory retirement age which provided a norm for retirement behaviour and a threshold dividing older from younger age groups. Governments, by setting fixed starting dates for work and retirement, created a standardised life cycle with clearly delineated and uniform boundaries between education, work and retirement stages. Over the last 30 years or so, retirem…

  • Capabilities, Culture and Social Structure

    William A Jackson•ARTICLE•Review of Social Economy•2005•Cited by: 7•References: 35

Sen's capability approach has a culturally specific side, with capabilities influenced by social structures and institutions. Although Sen acknowledges this, he expresses his theory in individualistic terms and makes little allowance for culture or social structure. The present paper draws from recent social theory to discuss how the capability approach could be developed to give an explicit treatment of cultural and structural matters. Capabilit…

  • Cultural Materialism and Institutional Economics

    William A Jackson•ARTICLE•Review of Social Economy•1996•Cited by: 5•References: 17

Economics and culture have usually been kept apart in academic discussion. The resulting division is damaging to economics, since important cultural questions such as the formation of preferences, the influence of ideology and the relation between the individual and society are systematically neglected. Outside economics, however, anthropologists and literary theorists have formulated a 'cultural materialism' that seeks to reintegrate culture wit…

  • On the Treatment of Population Ageing in Economic Theory

    Open Access•William A Jackson•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•1991•References: 4

Population ageing is often thought to have adverse economic consequences, and economics therefore has a responsibility for contributing to an understanding of ageing. This paper discusses the treatment of population ageing in economic theory and argues that mainstream economics is too narrow and restrictive to provide an adequate representation of ageing. An alternative to mainstream economic theory is a more pluralistic view of ageing, drawing f…

  • Generalized Rationing Theory

    Open Access•William A Jackson•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•1991•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This paper extends the duality approach to rationing to cover general quantity constraints on consumption. In the generalized theory, the allocation of goods within a ration can be characterized as a choice of virtual prices by the consumer. A rationed method is relevant whenever consumers are influenced by external factors introduced as additional constraints into neoclassical consumer theory.
