Open Access•Dmytro Bukhanevych, Rayan Succar et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Social media platforms have become a key tool for politicians to signal their policy positions and communicate about issues that are salient to them and their constituency. One such issue is gun violence. Grounded in framing and issue-attention cycle theories, this paper analyzes the response of members of the United States (US) Congress to mass shootings on social media. We analyzed 785,881 gun-related tweets from members of the 117 th US Congre…

  • Formative reasons for state-to-state influences on firearm acquisition in the U.S

Open Access•Xu Wang, James Macinko et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2024

Results suggest that state policies or programs that reduce gun homicides will also help suppress that state's influence on the patterning of firearm acquisition in other states. Furthermore, states with stricter firearm laws are more likely to influence firearm acquisition in other states, but are themselves shielded from the effects of other states' firearm acquisition patterns. These results inform future research in public health, criminology…

  • Social signals as design interventions for enhancing citizen science contributions

David Diner, Shinnosuke Nakayama et al.•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•2018

Despite the scientific potential and increasing popularity of web-based citizen science, low contribution from volunteers is often a major hurdle. Studies have shown that individual behavior could be altered through targeted design interventions, but little is known about the specific factors that modulate volunteers’ contributions. A particularly elusive question entails the role of social feedback, in the form of targeted notifications about th…

  • An Interactive Robotic Fish Exhibit for Designed Settings in Informal Science Learning

Open Access•Paul Phamduy, Mary Leou et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•2017

Informal science learning aims to improve public understanding of STEM. Free-choice learners can be engaged in a wide range of experiences, ranging from watching entertaining educational videos to actively participating in hands-on projects. Efforts in informal science learning are often gauged by their ability to elicit interaction, to foster learning, and to influence perceptions of STEM fields. This paper presents the installation of a biomime…
