  • Changing gear

    Open Access•Theresa Jones, L Enria et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2022

Long-term research projects are not always able to adapt to a new crisis and incorporate characteristics and approaches of rapid research to produce useful data quickly. Project AViD was a programme of research that ran between 2018 and 2022 to examine factors that shape vaccine confidence. The project initially focused on five country case studies looking at vaccines for Ebola, Measles, Rift Valley Fever and Zika. The COVID-19 pandemic emerged d…

  • Advancing and translating knowledge

Open Access•Ashley Nemiro, Theresa Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Prisms Global Mental…•2022

The evidence base for MHPSS has grown significantly over the last 10 years. However, several knowledge gaps remain, as does the divide between research and practice. Moving forward, MHPSS intervention research needs to be more responsive to the needs on the ground

  • How district health decision-making is shaped within decentralised contexts

Open Access•Susan Bulthuis, Maryse Kok et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2020

District Health Management Teams (DHMTs) are often entry points for the implementation of health interventions. Insight into decision-making and power relationships at district level could assist DHMTs to make better use of their decision space. This study explored how district-level health system decision-making is shaped by power dynamics in different decentralised contexts in Ghana, Malawi and Uganda. In-depth interviews took place with nation…

  • Sub-national prevalence survey of tuberculosis in rural communities of Ethiopia

Open Access•Daniel G Datiko, Ermias Amsalu Guracha et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The prevalence of smear positive TB varies by districts and is high in rural southern Ethiopia compared to the estimated national prevalence. More TB patients remain missed and unreached, impacting negatively on health outcomes. TB case finding approaches should be revisited and innovative approaches and tools to identify missing people with TB should be scaled up

  • Does supportive supervision enhance community health worker motivation? A mixed-methods study in four African countries

Open Access•Maryse Kok, Frédérique Vallières et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 35

Supportive supervision is an important element of community health worker (CHW) programmes and is believed to improve CHW motivation and performance. A group supervision intervention, which included training and mentorship of supervisors, was implemented in Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi and Mozambique. In three of the countries, this was combined with individual and/or peer supervision. A mixed-methods implementation study was conducted to assess the e…

  • How does context influence performance of community health workers in low- and middle-income countries? Evidence from the literature

Open Access•Maryse Kok, Maryse C Kok et al.•ARTICLE•Health Research Policy and Systems•2015

BACKGROUND: Community health workers (CHWs) are increasingly recognized as an integral component of the health workforce needed to achieve public health goals in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Many factors intersect to influence CHW performance. A systematic review with a narrative analysis was conducted to identify contextual factors influencing performance of CHWs. METHODS: We searched six databases for quantitative, qualitative, and…

  • Patient and community experiences of tuberculosis diagnosis and care within a community-based intervention in Ethiopia

Open Access•Olivia Tulloch, Sally Theobald et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

There is evidence rural populations with high levels of poverty, and in particular women, are at high risk of unmet health needs and undiagnosed TB. Embedding TB services within communities was an acceptable approach for vulnerable groups experiencing poor access to health facilities. In the Ethiopian context this approach can facilitate early diagnosis and improve treatment outcomes

  • What can volunteer co-providers contribute to health systems? The role of people living with HIV in the Thai paediatric HIV programme

    Open Access•Olivia Tulloch, Miriam Taegtmeyer et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2015•References: 33

  • What Should the Ideal HIV Self-Test Look Like? A Usability Study of Test Prototypes in Unsupervised HIV Self-Testing in Kenya, Malawi, and South Africa

Open Access•Roger Peck, Roger B Peck et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2014
