The Impact of Private Long-Term Care Insurance on the Use of Long-Term Care
This paper investigates the effects of privately purchased long-term care insurance (LTCI) on three major types of long-term care services: nursing home care, paid home care, and informal care received from Family and friends. Using 2002-2008 data from the ongoing Health and Retirement Study, we analyze the determinants of long-term care utilization simultaneously with the determinants of holding LTCI. Analysis of two large and nationally representative data sets suggests that among older adults drinking alcohol, or even heavily drinking alcohol, does not raise or lower the risk of a hospital admission or the risk of an ER visit

Data from the Longitudinal Survey of Income and Program Participation were used to examine the dynamics of health insurance among persons 55 to 64 years of age. Persons in this age range are especially vulnerable to incurring high health care costs. Between the summer of 1983 and early 1986, 21% of persons 55 to 64 years of age experienced some time without health insurance. The authors examine the premium consequences of alternative health insurance provisions by estimating pricing regressions for group insurance with data on 9, 019 fee-for-service plans offered by larger firms in the private sector. The Role of Physicians in Hospital Production
We use a translog production function approach to examine the effects of medical staff physicians on hospital production, and how their effects differ in teaching and nonteaching hospitals. In teaching hospitals, we also focus on the special role of medical residents. We find that physicians have a strong positive influence on the productivity of other inputs, and that they are substitutes for other resources. Controlling for patient casemix caus…
