Does primary care level psychotherapy associate with later use of long-term psychotherapy – longitudinal register-based cohort study among Finnish occupationally active individuals
BACKGROUND: One key question for current psychotherapy research is how limited resources should be used efficiently to optimise treatment pathways. We examined how primary care level (PCL) psychotherapy, a history of mental disorder, and sociodemographic factors are associated with the later probability of receiving long-term rehabilitative psychotherapy. METHODS: This longitudinal observational cohort study based on a register data from the Gaps…
Predictors of improved readiness for work life
Predictors of employment have been studied extensively previously. However, even small beneficial changes in readiness for work life are relevant, regardless of whether the person has yet gained employment. This study explored how the unemployed individuals’ readiness for work life could be assessed by using a self-report measure and whether certain factors of work ability and functioning were predictors of a beneficial change in this measure. Th…
Time spent abroad as a source of human capital – A nationwide study
This study examined the extent to which time spent abroad contributes to human capital, using higher income as an indicator. Utilising Finnish register data, the study focused on returning migrants with higher education ( N = 3497), matched with a reference population ( N = 30,882). Time abroad was associated with a higher income level upon return amongst men (returnees €63,199, reference €55,982), but not amongst women (returnees €39,316, refere…
Covid-19 infection and later risk of sickness absence by socioeconomic status
Employees who reported contracting first-wave COVID-19 infection had higher rates of sickness absence in the following year. This excess risk was most consistently observed in employees with intermediate socioeconomic status (e.g. office workers, registered nurses, and social workers)
Prediction of bullying at work
While many bivariate associations between socioeconomic characteristics, work characteristics, leadership, team climate, and job satisfaction were observed, reliable individualized detection of individuals at risk of becoming bullied at workplace was not successful. The predictive performance of the developed risk scores was suboptimal, and we do not recommend their use as an individual-level risk prediction tool. However, they might be useful to…
Associations of neighborhood disadvantage and offender concentration with criminal behavior
The association between neighborhood disadvantage and crime has been extensively studied, but most studies have relied on cross-sectional data and have been unable to separate potential effects of the neighborhood from selection effects. We examined how neighborhood disadvantage and offender concentration are associated with criminal behavior while accounting for selection effects due to unobserved time-invariant characteristics of the individual…
Personality, disability‐free life years, and life expectancy
OBJECTIVE: We examined how personality traits of the Five Factor Model were related to years of healthy life years lost (mortality and disability) for individuals and the population. METHOD: Participants were 131,195 individuals from 10 cohort studies from Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States (n = 43,935 from seven cohort studies for the longitudinal analysis of disability, assessed using scales of Activities of Daily Liv…
