Calculation of Costs Related to Death by Suicide in Finland
There are relatively few calculations of the costs related to suicides. The aim was to produce a monetary estimate of the costs incurred as a result of suicides. The costs were divided into three categories: (1) loss of labor input, (2) costs directly following a suicide, and (3) costs associated with family members. In our two sample cases, the costs related to suicides were from EUR 309,020 to EUR 456,279. By putting the monetary costs of suici…
Population-level indicators associated with hormonal contraception use
Sociodemographic differences in relation to HC use exist across Finnish municipalities. Municipal indicators of social structure, health and welfare, and investment in and use of healthcare services are related to HC use
Extensions of Multiple-Group Item Response Theory Alignment
Large-scale studies spanning diverse project sites, populations, languages, and measurements are increasingly important to relate psychological to biological variables. National and international consortia already are collecting and executing mega-analyses on aggregated data from individuals, with different measures on each person. In this research, we show that Asparouhov and Muthén's alignment method can be adapted to align data from disparate …
Trends and predictors in all-cause and cause-specific mortality in diabetic and reference populations during 21 years of follow-up
Background Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) have a markedly higher overall mortality from coronary heart disease (CHD), as well as many other causes of death like cancer. Since diabetes is a multisystem disease, this fact together with the increased lifespan among individuals with diabetes may also lead to the emergence of other diabetes-related complications and ultimately to diversification of the causes of death. Methods The study populati…
Physical activity and sleep profiles in Finnish men and women
The use of latent class analysis in investigating the interrelationship between PA and sleep is a novel perspective. The method provides information on the clustering of behaviors in people and the profiles found suggest an accumulative nature of leisure time PA, and better sleep. Our data also suggest that high levels of occupational PA are associated with shorter and poorer sleep
Work-family conflicts and subsequent sleep medication among women and men
Sociodemographic and socioeconomic differences in sleep duration and insomnia-related symptoms in Finnish adults
Disadvantaged socioeconomic position in adulthood, in particular income and employment status, is associated with poorer sleep. When promoting optimal sleep duration and better sleep quality, families with low incomes, unemployed people, and disability retirees should be targeted
Daylight saving time transitions and hospital treatments due to accidents or manic episodes
One-hour transitions do not increase the incidence of manic episodes or accidents which require hospital treatment
