  • Experiences of Everyday Discrimination by Sexual Orientation in a Large National Cohort of Female Nurses

    Open Access•Chandra A Reynolds, Tabor Hoatson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2026•References: 57

While discrimination has been studied among sexual minorities (SM), researchers have called for several necessary innovations, including adopting standard measures of discrimination and identifying attributions of such mistreatment among sexual minorities. We used data from the Nurses' Health Study 2 ( n = 69,483)-a longitudinal cohort of female nurses across the U.S. Experiences of discrimination were measured in 2017 using the Everyday Discrimi…

  • Exploring Perspectives on HIV Vulnerability Communication among Transgender and Gender Diverse Patients and Primary Care Providers

Open Access•Hill L Wolfe, Jaclyn M White Hughto et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•2025

  • Characterizing disparities in the HIV care continuum among U.S. transgender and cisgender Medicare beneficiaries, 2008–2017

Jaclyn M White Hughto, Hiren Varma et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2025

Although HIV is more prevalent among transgender and gender-diverse individuals than cisgender people, a dearth of research has compared the HIV-related care engagement of these populations. Using 2008-2017 Medicare data, we identified TGD (trans feminine and non-binary [TFN], trans masculine and non-binary [TMN], unclassified gender) and cisgender (male, female) beneficiaries with HIV and explored within and between gender group differences in t…

  • Cardiovascular Health at the Intersection of Race and Gender in Medicare Fee for Service

Open Access•Gray Babbs, Kendra Offiaeli et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2025

This cross-sectional study found that Asian and Pacific Islander, Black, and Hispanic TGD beneficiaries had a high prevalence of cardiovascular-related conditions and had an elevated prevalence of several conditions, attributable to the intersection of gender, race, and ethnicity. Medicare should use the tools at its disposal to support the health of TGD beneficiaries

    Landon D Hughes, Wesley M Correll-King et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 32

Objectives. To compare survival by gender and race among transgender and cisgender people enrolled in private insurance in the United States between 2011 and 2019. Methods. We examined Optum’s Clinformatics Data Mart Database. We identified transgender enrollees using claims related to gender-affirming care. Our analytic sample included those we identified as transgender and a 10% random sample of cisgender enrollees. We limited our sample to tho…

  • Differences in All-Cause Mortality Among Transgender and Non-Transgender People Enrolled in Private Insurance

    Open Access•Landon D Hughes, Wesley M Correll-King et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2022•Cited by: 8•References: 63

Few studies have analyzed mortality rates among transgender (trans) populations in the United States and compared them to the rates of non-trans populations. Using private insurance data from 2011 to 2019, we estimated age-specific all-cause mortality rates among a subset of trans people enrolled in private insurance and compared them to a 10% randomly selected non-trans cohort. Overall, we found that trans people were nearly twice as likely to d…
