  • Gender dynamics in the workplace1: Reflecting on lessons drawn from 40 years of academia

Jeanne De Bruijn, Jeanne G M De Bruijn•ARTICLE•Tijdschrift voor Genderstudies•2020

This essay addresses two issues concerning gender dynamics in the workplace. First, why does the ‘leaky pipeline’ – for women and people of colour – still leaks, resulting in increasing gaps with every step on the career ladder? Second, why did sexual harassment in the workplace recently receive renewed media attention? This essay is based on the farewell address of the author after 40 years in academia in gender studies. She reflects on the rese…

  • Are the Chinese Saving for Old Age: The Relationship between Future Pension Benefits of 45–60 Years Old Chinese and Current Household Expenditures

Open Access•Caroline van Dullemen, Ingeborg M Nagel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Population Ageing•2016

Worldwide, older people's support used to be the adult children's responsibility. In China, two generations after introducing the one-child policy in the late 70-ies, this becomes an increasingly demanding obligation. The Chinese government took the responsibility to mitigating old- age poverty risks and realized unprecedented progress in pension coverage. At the same time, the household savings increased to about 30 % of disposable income. Built…

Open Access•Nikil Van Wijk, Edith De Leeuw et al.•ARTICLE•CAM•2015•References: 13

To collect reliable statistical data on domestic violence in Curaçao, we conducted a large-scale quantitative study ( n = 816). To meet with the special needs of the population and topic, we designed a tailored mixed-mode survey to assess the prevalence of domestic violence in Curaçao and its health consequences. Great care was taken to reduce selective nonresponse and stimulate open and honest responses. We describe how we implemented and tailor…

The enduring importance and utility of comparative research in sociology are as old as the discipline itself. Although comparative research flourishes within this discipline, methodological problems persist. After defining comparative research, this article outlines some of its central problems, including: (1) case selection, unit, level and scale of analysis; (2) construct equivalence; (3) variable or case orientation; and (4) causality. The dis…

  • European Social Citizenship and Gender: The Part-time Work Directive

Open Access•Inge Bleijenbergh, Jeanne De Bruijn et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Industrial…•2004

This article considers whether the development of European rights for workers implies a European social citizenship. It analyses the debate during the preparation and adoption of the EU Directive on part-time work in 1997, which guarantees part-time workers (who are primarily women) the same pay and working conditions as full-time workers. Was the concept of social citizenship discussed during its preparation and adoption? What kind of gender equ…
