Although significance is sparse amongst several of the variables included in the analysis, we do find a tendency for the probability of tobacco control to be higher in lower income non-EU countries, with larger shares of government health care expenditures
Clean Indoor Air Laws and cigarette demand
This paper investigates the impact of Clean Indoor Air Laws on the demand for cigarettes. Utilizing recently published ratings of State Clean Indoor Air Laws, which account for restrictions on the locations of permissible smoking, as well as enforcement and penalties, the results show that demand falls as smoking restrictions are elevated. Although many studies find that smoking bans reduce cigarette demand, arguments can be made for smoking bans also affecting alcohol demand. Accordingly, in this paper we address the determinants of state-level alcohol demand, which we treat as a function of various economic and demographic variables, as well as smoking bans. Several cities have recently adopted living wage ordinances which mandate that firms contracting with the city pay their workers an hourly wage at or above the legislated “living wage rate” set by the city. This paper addresses the impact of several factors on rates of sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the United States. Similar to existing studies, which proxy health outcomes by mortality rates or life expectancy, we find that health care spending improves health outcome.
