Obesity And Cash Rewards
In a multi-phase randomized controlled trial, we examine the impacts of cash rewards of EUR 150 and EUR 300 for reducing body weight on the likelihood of weight loss and weight-related behavioral change among 700 obese individuals. We find effects during all experimental phases, including 18 months after exposure to the incentives. Additional monetary rewards of EUR 250 and EUR 500 provided to participants who had lost a substantial amount of bod…
Weight Loss and Sexual Activity in Adult Obese Individuals
Obesity may not only be linked to undesirable health outcomes but also to limitations in sexual life. The present paper aims to assess whether there is a causal relationship between weight loss and sexual activity in adult obese individuals. To address the endogeneity of weight loss that is likely to result in biased estimation results, the analysis is based on data from a randomized field experiment. In this experiment, financial weight-loss rew…
Does moderate weight loss affect subjective health perception in obese individuals? Evidence from field experimental data
This paper analyzes whether moderate weight reduction improves subjective health perception in obese individuals. Besides simple regression models, in a simultaneous equation framework we use randomized monetary weight loss incentives as instrument for weight change, to address possible endogeneity bias. In contrast to related earlier work that also employed instrumental variables estimation, identification does not rely on long-term, between-ind…
