Open Access•Curt Mueller, Curt D Mueller et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2004

Context: Rural impacts of a Medicare drug benefit will ultimately depend on the number of elderly who are currently without drug coverage, new demand by those currently without coverage, the nature of the new benefit relative to current benefits, and benefit design. Purpose: To enhance understanding of drug coverage among rural elderly Medicare beneficiaries and their expenditures for pharmaceuticals. Methods: Estimates of the extent of coverage,…

  • Where to Seek Care

Open Access•Claudia L Schur, Marc L Berk et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2002

Though HIV/AIDS has spread to rural areas, little empirical evidence is available on where patients living in these areas receive care This article presents estimates of rural residents in care for HIV/AIDS, their demographic and health‐related characteristics, information about whether they receive care in a rural or urban setting, and data on the drug therapies prescribed The estimates come from the HlV Cost and Services Utilization Study (HCSU…

  • Health Care Use Among Undocumented Latino Immigrants

    Marc L Berk, Claudia L Schur et al.•ARTICLE•Health Affairs•2000

Using data from a 1996/1997 survey of undocumented Latino immigrants in four sites, we examine reasons for coming to the United States, use of health care services, and participation in government programs. We find that undocumented Latinos come to this country primarily for jobs. Their ambulatory health care use is low compared with that of all Latinos and all persons nationally, and their rates of hospitalization are comparable except for hospi…

  • Hospital-Physician Arrangements and Hospital Financial Performance

    Tami L Mark, William N Evans William N Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1998•References: 5

OBJECTIVES: The introduction of the Medicare Prospective Payment System and the more recent rise of managed care plans have greatly increased the importance of effective hospital financial management. Because physicians play a central role in directing hospital resource use, policies to influence physician behavior and to align physician and hospital interests more effectively are being advocated increasingly. This article evaluates the effect of…

    C Mueller, Curt D Mueller et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1997•Cited by: 5•References: 5

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine how pharmaceutical expenditures vary by age and the presence of chronic health problems. METHODS: Data from the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey were used to obtain nationally representative estimates of outpatient prescription drug expenditures for the noninstitutionalized population and the fraction of total health expenditures used to purchase medications for age-chronic disease popu…

  • The growth in the US uninsured population

Marc L Berk, Leigh Ann Albers et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1996•Cited by: 6•References: 5

This paper presents trends in the growth in the US uninsured population, using cross-sectional national estimates from 1977, 1987, 1989, and 1992 and focusing specifically on coverage problems experienced by Hispanic Americans. An examination of the composition of uninsured persons added between 1977 and 1992 shows that almost 40% of the difference is accounted for by persons of Hispanic origin, with those of Mexican origin alone constituting 27%…

    Open Access•Amy B Bernstein, Claudia L Schur•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•1990

This article presents national estimates of the probability of having an unintentional injury, the types of medical care associated with unintentional injuries, and the costs of unintentional injuries that occurred in calender year 1977 for persons aged 65 and older. Data come from the 1977 National Medical Care Expenditure Survey (NMCES) and the 1977 National Nursing Home Survey (NNHS). Among persons aged 65 and older, we found differences in th…

  • The Importance of Distinguishing Hispanic Subpopulations in the Use of Medical Care

    Claudia L Schur, Amy B Bernstein et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1987

Rather than analyzing Hispanics as a homogeneous population, this paper uses the 1977 National Medical Care Expenditure Survey in order to make separate national estimates for Cubans, Puerto Ricans, and Mexicans. Utilization of various health services by these three groups is discussed, as well as their insurance coverage, mean annual expenses by source of payment, and health status indicators. The analysis has a descriptive as well as multivaria…
