La succession de Rousselot à travers la correspondance de Pernot et Millet avec Chlumský
Cet article replace les premiers développements de la phonétique à Paris dans leur contexte. Il analyse le réseau complexe des institutions parisiennes impliquées dans la phonétique expérimentale, en soulignant le rôle déterminant de personnalités comme Rousselot et leurs liens avec ces établissements. Il présente ensuite la collection de lettres échangées entre Pernot, Millet et Chlumský, en insistant sur les personnes clés engagées dans cette c…
Multi-Dimensional Variation in Adult Speech as a Function of Age
We present a multidimensional acoustic report describing variation in speech productions on data collected from 500 francophone adult speakers (20 to 93 y.o.a.) as a function of age. In this cross-sectional study, chronological age is considered as a continuous variable while oral productions, in reading and speech-like tasks, are characterized via 22 descriptors related to voice quality, pitch, vowel articulation and vocalic system organization,…
Changes in Anticipatory VtoV Coarticulation in French during Adulthood
In this study, we test whether anticipatory Vowel-to-Vowel coarticulation varies with age in the speech of 246 adult French speakers aged between 20 and 93. The relationship between coarticulation and the known age-related change in speech rate is also investigated. The results show a gradual decrease in the amount of coarticulation for speakers from 20 to mid-50s, followed by a more abrupt decrease for speakers older than 70. For speakers in bet…
Domain-initial effects on C-to-V and V-to-V coarticulation in French: A corpus-based study
Domain-initial strengthening on French vowels and phonological contrasts: Evidence from lip articulation and spectral variation
The Oxford handbook of laboratory phonology
"This book provides state-of-the-art coverage of research in laboratory phonology, an interdisciplinary research perspective which brings a wide range of experimental and analytic tools to bear on the central questions of how knowledge of spoken language is structured, learned, and used. The book presents works illustrating how laboratory phonology is practiced and highlights promising areas of current research. Contributions address how laborato…
Phonetic reduction versus phonological deletion of French schwa: Some methodological issues
Laboratory Phonology 10
The present volume contains a selection of the papers and commentaries which were originally presented at the Tenth Conference of Laboratory Phonology (LabPhon10) held in Paris from June 29 to July 1, 2006. The theme of the volume is Variation, Phonetic Detail and Phonological Representation. It brings together specialists of different fields of speech research with the goal to discuss the relevance of patterns of variation and phonetic details o…
Realizations of accentual phrase in French intonation
In this paper we provide a detailed account of the various realizations of the accentual phrase in our phonological model of French intonation (Jun & Fougeron 1995, 2000), and introduce a slight revision in tone-syllable association. In addition to the default and unmarked phrases, we examine the intonational contour of long polymorphemic words and utterances containing a sequence of several clitics. We discuss the status of additional H tones fo…
Articulatory properties of initial segments in several prosodic constituents in French
A Phonological Model of French Intonation
Rate effects on French intonation: Prosodic Organization and Phonetic Realization
Articulatory strengthening at edges of prosodic domains
In this paper it is shown that at the edges of prosodic domains, initial consonant and final vowels have more extreme (less reduced) lingual articulations, which are called articulatory strengthening. Linguopalatal contact for consonants and vowels in different prosodic positions was compared, using reiterant-speech versions of sentences with a variety of phrasings read by three speakers of American English. Four prosodic domains were considered:…
French
The following description of French is based on the speech of a young Parisian female speaker. Varieties of French have almost identical inventories; the main differences are to be found in the maintenance or loss of certain contrasts
