Measurement of schizophrenia symptoms through speech analysis from PANSS interview recordings
A large sample of PANSS recordings was successfully processed using open source methods for phenotyping and strong relationships between speech characteristics and symptoms from these recordings were observed. These observations, consistent with existing understandings of speech-based manifestations of schizophrenia, highlight the potential use of patient speech collected passively during clinical interactions for digital phenotyping and symptom …
Digital phenotypes of the diminished capacity for consummatory and anticipatory pleasure
Diminished capacities to experience and anticipate pleasure have been differentially associated with psychopathology. However, measurement of this construct has been limited to self-report scales and complex behavioral tasks. In the present study, university students ( N = 100) were categorized into low and high scorers on self-report measures of consummatory and anticipatory pleasure. Low and high scorers were then compared on the facial, vocal,…
Can Mental Health Care Become More Human by Becoming More Digital
Over the past two decades, advances in digital technologies have begun to transform three aspects of mental health care. The use of sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) have provided new, objective measures of how we think, feel, and behave. The ease of connecting and communicating remotely has transformed the brick-and-mortar practice of mental health care into a telehealth service, increasing access and convenience for both patients and pro…
Simon: A Digital Protocol to Monitor and Predict Suicidal Ideation
Each year, more than 800,000 persons die by suicide, making it a leading cause of death worldwide. Recent innovations in information and communication technology may offer new opportunities in suicide prevention in individuals, hereby potentially reducing this number. In our project, we design digital indices based on both self-reports and passive mobile sensing and test their ability to predict suicidal ideation, a major predictor for suicide, a…
Trajectories of resilience and dysfunction following potential trauma: A review and statistical evaluation
The resilience framework as a strategy to combat stress-related disorders
Heterogeneous Patterns of Stress Over the Four Years of College: Associations With Anxious Attachment and Ego‐Resiliency
OBJECTIVE: A growing body of literature suggests that college students display alarming rates of psychological distress. However, studies of responses to significant life stressors in other contexts have found that people respond in heterogeneous ways and that attachment style and ego-resiliency mitigate the effects of stressors on mental health. METHOD: Individual differences in distress among a cohort of students (N = 157; Mean age = 18.8 years…
Early physical victimization is a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms among Mississippi police and firefighter first responders to Hurricane Katrina
The goal of the current study was to examine the relationship between early physical victimization and long-term mental health outcomes in a sample of first responder police and firefighter personnel involved in the relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina. Participants included 441 Biloxi and Gulfport Police and Firefighters. One fifth of participants reported having experienced physical victimization before age 18. After controlling for age, rela…
Positive and negative emotion prospectively predict trajectories of resilience and distress among high-exposure police officers
Responses to both potentially traumatic events and other significant life stressors have been shown to conform to discrete patterns of response such as resilience, anticipatory stress, initial distress with gradual recovery, and chronic distress. The etiology of these trajectories is still unclear. Individual differences in levels of negative and positive emotion are believed to play a role in determining risk and resilience following traumatic e…
