The Migration-commuting nexus in rural England. A longitudinal analysis
Tiered Housing Markets and their Relationship to Labour Market Areas
This paper develops a tiered geography of local housing market areas (HMAs) that provides a national framework for spatial planning. It is derived from a theoretical understanding of the economic basis of HMAs. The analysis explores the relationships between the tiers of the HMA geography and local labour market areas. Drawing on this understanding, the empirical research generates sets of different potential geographies of HMAs for England based…
Family violence and risk of substance use among Mexican adolescents
Treatment programs for young people who have suffered family violence should consider adolescence not only as a stage of vulnerability for substance use but also as a critical time to implement preventive measures. For these measures, a joint strategy for both parents and adolescents should be considered, not only to stop the violence but also warn the parents about the serious consequences of the same
Social engagement and regional theatre: Patterns of theatre attendance
This paper assesses the degree to which a typical regional theatre engages with society. It uses postcodes from theatre booking data and compares the socioecenomic profiles of these postcodes with postcodes from which no theatregoers are drawn. A re-working of recent theories of class provides a conceptual context, whilst discriminant analysis is used to identify the socioecenomic factors of postcodes associated with theatre and non-theatre atten…
Defining regions for locality health care planning: A Multidimensional Approach
Measuring destination attractivity: A migration example
The power of places to draw migrants is a topic of fundamental interest in geographical and related social studies and also in policy circles. This paper describes and demonstrates the utility of a measure of migration attractivity which is considered superior to those most widely used previously. Following a review of the importance now attached to measuring place attractiveness, the paper documents the deficiencies of the most commonly used met…
A Mark 1 Geographical Analysis Machine for the automated analysis of point data sets
This paper presents the first of a new generation of spatial analytical technology based on a fusion of statistical, GIS and computational thinking. It describes how to build what is termed a Geographical Analysis Machine (GAM), with high descriptive power. A GAM offers an imaginative new approach to the analysis of point pattern data based on a fully automated process whereby a point data set is explored for evidence of pattern without being und…
A Geographical Information and Mapping System for the BBC Domesday Optical Discs
The paper outlines the nature of the geographical information system that was developed for the BBC Domesday optical disc project. The successful exploitation of optical disc storage for geographical analysis and mappings dependent on the development of appropriate data structures that allow fastest possible data retrieval for geographical areas of interest. The authors describe how they achieved this objective such that a low powered BBC micro-c…
