  • Early and risky adolescent alcohol use independently predict alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other drug use in early adulthood in Ireland

Open Access•Margaret M Brennan, Deirdre Mongan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Age at first alcohol and risky adolescent alcohol use independently predict substance use in early adulthood when considered jointly in extensively adjusted models. These findings highlight the continued urgent need for public health interventions that address factors associated with early alcohol use and support adolescents who use alcohol in a high-risk manner given their elevated risk of progression to more serious substance use as adults

  • Non-adherence to Covid-19 containment behaviours

    Open Access•Martin Dempster, Nicola O''Connell et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Non-adherers to handwashing differ to social distancing non-adherers. Public health messages should target specific demographic groups and different messages are necessary to improve adherence to each behaviour

  • Media Representations of Science during the First Wave of the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Open Access•Carla O’connor, Nicola O''Connell et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

COVID-19 is arguably the most critical science communication challenge of a generation, yet comes in the wake of a purported populist turn against scientific expertise in western societies. This study advances understanding of science-society relations during the COVID-19 pandemic by analysing how science was represented in news and social media coverage of COVID-19 on the island of Ireland. Thematic analysis was performed on a dataset comprising…

  • Bordering on crisis

    Open Access•Carla O’connor, Nicola O''Connell et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2021•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 28

Results reveal clear public appetite for greater synchronisation of cross-border pandemic responses, emphasise the specific vulnerability of communities living near the border, and highlight the risk of long-term socio-political repercussions of border management decisions taken during the pandemic. Findings will inform implementation of pandemic responses and public health policies in jurisdictions that share a porous land border

  • Genetic evidence of assortative mating in humans

    Open Access•M R Robinson, Aaron Kleinman et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2017•Citada por: 23•Referencias: 49

  • Patterns of Smoking Behaviour in Low-Income Pregnant Women

Open Access•Catherine Hayes, Morgan Kearney et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Maternal smoking accounts for 20%-30% of low birth weight (BW). Second-Hand Smoke (SHS) also negatively affects BW. This cohort study explored the differential effect of smoking patterns during pregnancy on infant BW. Smoking status for 652 self-reported smokers attending public ante-natal clinics was assessed at baseline (V1 first ante-natal visit), 28-32 weeks (V2) and one week after birth (V3). Multivariable generalised linear regression model…

  • Estimating the burden of rheumatoid arthritis in Africa

Open Access•Ben Dowman, Ruth M Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2012

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has an estimated worldwide prevalence of 1%. It is one of the leading causes of chronic morbidity in the developed world, but little is known about the disease burden in Africa. RA is often seen as a minor health problem and has been neglected in research and resource allocation throughout Africa despite potentially fatal systemic manifestations. This review aims to identify all relevant epidemiological liter…

  • Setting priorities for development of emerging interventions against childhood pneumonia, meningitis and influenza

Open Access•Igor Rudan, Evropi Τheodoratou et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2012

A cute lower respiratory infections, which broadly include pneumonia and bronchiolitis, are still the leading cause of childhood mortality. ALRI contributed to 18% of all deaths in children younger than five years of age in 2008 [1], and the main pathogens responsible for high mortality were Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and respiratory syncytial virus [2-4]. In addition, meningitis was estimated to contribute up to 200 000 dea…

  • Effects of Isolation and Inbreeding on Human Quantitative Traits

Dražen Pulanić, Ozren Polasek et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2008

Isolation is a known force in evolutionary biology and one of the main factors in speciation. One of the main consequences of severe isolation is reduced mate choice, which results in the occurrence of inbreeding as a result of isolation. We investigated the effects of individual genome-wide heterozygosity measured as the multilocus heterozygosity (MLH) on biochemical markers of hemostasis and inflammation in 1,041 individuals from the island of …
