Development and evaluation of a 21-item version of the hopkins symptom checklist with New Zealand and united states respondents
The Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL) is a widely used measure of symptom distress and in particular is a valuable criterion measure in psychotherapeutic drug trials. Its reliability, validity, and sensitivity to change have been well established. However, its factor structure has been subject to much debate. In previous studies a wide range of different factor structures have been found by various researchers. The aim of the present study was to …
Factor Analysis of the Wais-R Using the Factor Replication Procedure, Factorep
The factor structure of the WAIS-R has been the subject of much debate and recently researchers have examined multiple independent samples and compared the resulting factor structures using the coefficient of congruence. On the basis of this, one recent study concluded that the WAIS-R had three clear factors. In the present study this conclusion was questioned and it was claimed that the previous result was an artifact caused by the large general…

Multiple replication of the factor structure of the inventory of socially supportive behaviors
Interest in the beneficial effects of social support for the physical and psychological well-being of individuals has rapidly grown. The Inventory of Socially Supportive Behaviors is one promising new questionnaire that has been designed to measure this psychosocial dimension. While in many ways this is a psychometrically sound questionnaire, the number of stable factors it includes has yet to be established. This problem was solved in the presen…
Reactions of family partners of Antarctic expeditioners
This study breaks new ground by involving the partners of Antarctic expeditioners as well as the expeditioners themselves in one aspect of a comprehensive research programme on stress. It reports the reactions of both parties before, during and after their separation. It shows that there were discrepancies between the partners about the sufficiency of prior discussion, the possibility of injury or death arising with the expeditioners on their haz…

The Stress Arousal Checklist: An Independent Analysis
The factor structure of the Stress Arousal Checklist (SACL) was examined using the responses of a New Zealand sample of 203 first and second year University students. The results produced an almost exact replication of the two bipolar factors claimed by the authors who developed the SACL. In addition the results support the circumplex model of affect in which mood states are viewed not as unipolar independent variables but as two dimensional bipo…
Factorep: A Pascal Program to Examine Factor Replication
FACTOREP is a computer program which provides information to solve the problem of determining the most appropriate number of factors to be rotated in order to produce a replicable and stable factor structure. This objective is accomplished by using the s index which enables a researcher to make comparisons of similarity across different factor structures. Matrices of s index values are produced to indicate the degree of similarity in analyses acr…
Multiple Replication of Factor Structure: A Logical Solution for a Number of Factors Problem
A factor replication procedure which provides a solution for the numbers of factors problem for multiple scale questionnaire responses, is described and demonstrated. In the procedure a series of factor analyses are conducted in which a reduced number of factors is used for each successive rotation until a structure is found which is replicated across subject groups. The factor matching s index, which relates loadings as they fall about a series …
Prediction of performance on the International Biomedical Expedition to the Antarctic (Ibea)
Biographical variables, clinical ratings and psychological tests were used to predict performance of the eleven subjects involved in the International Biomedical Expedition to the Antarctic. The results showed that of the biographical predictors, past polar experience and age were best for predicting low stress and high arousal. Of the clinical predictions those made by a psychologist who had access to both interviews and psychometric material, a…
