Walking the Regulatory Line
Foundations exist to support charitable causes over an extended period, allowing investment returns to improve social conditions. In many countries, this is regulated by a required payout percentage each year. The existing research, overwhelmingly from the United States, has examined foundations' regulatory compliance under the static conditions of the longstanding rule of distribution of 5% of assets annually. Drawing on regulatory behavior theo…
How did the Pandemic Crisis Affect the Financial, Economic, and Social Performance of Social Enterprises? Insights from Italian Social Cooperatives
The COVID-19 crisis affected the world’s economic and social system in many ways. Social enterprises (SEs) play a necessary role in delivering social value during such crises (Bacq, S., and G. T. Lumpkin. 2020. “Social Entrepreneurship and COVID‐19.” Journal of Management Studies 58 (1): 285–8; Sarma, S. K., K. K. Kumar, and S. K. Mishra. 2022. “Strategic Response to COVID-19: How Do Social Enterprises Navigate Crisis Situations?” Social Enterpri…

Resilience and the Management of Nonprofit Organizations
This timely book examines the serious threats that pandemics, economic recessions, terrorist attacks and other potentially catastrophic events pose to nonprofit organizations. Reliant on donors, regulators, government funders and dedicated staff and volunteers, these organizations are often vulnerable and unprepared to navigate such crises. The book offers a new management paradigm to build healthier and more effective nonprofit organizations for…
A Model for Directing and Modulating Public Interventions in Social Enterprises
The world is no stranger to crises, and social enterprises struggle to both survive and deliver on mission. This study explores how public interventions can facilitate economic recovery through targeted assistance to social enterprises, specifically the Italian social cooperative. Despite their prevalence and beneficial impact on Italian communities, not all Italian social cooperatives are economically and/or financially healthy. So this study an…
Finding Your Crowd
The literature on the relationship between government funding and private donations finds evidence of both crowd-out (a reduction in private donations due to the receipt of government funding) and crowd-in (increased donations rather than a reduction). This study uses organizational-level data and information regarding funding from multiple levels of government in Canada to provide an important contribution to the literature, which has traditiona…
The elephant in the dark
Purpose The purpose of this paper is twofold. The first is to map the most influential literature in nonprofit finance and financial management. The second is to understand why the literature has evolved the way it has, including isolated silos developing in certain disciplines. Design/methodology/approach The review includes articles assembled from three sources: a core list, an expert list and journal archive searches on phrases that emerged. U…
The Importance of Methodological Pluralism in Nonprofit Finance
The study of nonprofit finance and financial management is growing in popularity. The numerical focus and availability of archival U.S. data have fueled the growth of the field; however, this availability has also influenced the research questions and methods utilized by researchers. Despite the dominance of large-scale quantitative analysis in the literature, there are a wide variety of research methods available in the field. Each approach has …
Utility of the advocacy coalition framework in a regional budget crisis
The advocacy coalition framework predicts that externally controlled events, such as jurisdictional shifts, can open venues for policy change within a policy subsystem. Advocacy coalitions may opt to look outside of their traditional decision-making venue for a more suitable venue. Yet, how and when coalitions use their political resources during this venue shift is unclear. We examine how coalitions leverage policy venues and resources when thei…
Public Agency Strategies, Collaborative Contracting, and Medicaid Managed Care
The nature of the interactions between the organizational entities involved in contracting receives less attention than the efficiency of the procurement and distribution of those services. This is particularly true in periods of policy turbulence, where tensions are high and environments unstable. This study builds on earlier theoretical contributions by cataloging almost 100 different strategies in interviews with state agencies and related pol…
Squandered in Real Time”
The United States places great emphasis on the public administration–politics dichotomy, but what happens to public management when the dichotomy breaks down? The authors critically evaluate the public management frameworks, New Public Management and New Public Governance, in the context of two major public management failures: the U.S. State of Illinois Budget Impasse during 2015–2017 and the COVID-19 Pandemic. A definition of public management …
The Social Enterprise Zoo
In this chapter we examine the alternative approaches to governing the zoo in Italy and England – two countries with long traditions of state support for social enterprise. Italy is widely credited with developing the concept of social enterprise, and was one of the first countries in the world to develop a specific legal form for social enterprise through the social cooperative, while England has arguably the most developed state support apparat…
