  • Linking farmers’ views of bovine tuberculosis to biosecurity behaviours

    Open Access•Deirdre A Robertson, Ciarán Lavin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2026•References: 33

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is an endemic disease. Eradication programmes generally involve state test-and-cull protocols, biosecurity standards and vaccination or culling of wildlife. This paper investigates how farmers' perceptions of bTB and eradication attempts influence their own behaviour. Qualitative research has highlighted specific perceptions that may influence behaviour. • Behavioural evidence to inform the Covid-19 pandemic response

    Open Access•Peter D Lunn, Shane Timmon et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioural Public Policy•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Humankind's main defence against the virus that cuases COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2), besides vaccine development, was co-ordinated behaviour change. In many countries, co-ordination was assisted by tracking surveys designed to measure self-reported behaviour and attitudes. This paper describes an alternative, complementary approach, which was undertaken in close collaboration with officials in the Department of the Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister). We a…

  • Using decision aids to support self-isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic

    Peter D Lunn, Shane Timmon et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology & Health•2021

OBJECTIVE: Self-isolation is a vital element of efforts to contain COVID-19. We set out to test whether decision aids can support self-isolation. DESIGN: We conducted a pre-registered online experiment with a nationally representative sample (n = 500). Three stages tested: (i) whether decision trees help people to decide whether they need to self-isolate; (ii) whether an online planning tool increases people's confidence in their ability to self-…

  • Using Behavioral Science to help fight the Coronavirus

    Open Access•Peter D Lunn, Cameron A Belton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Public…•2020

This rapid, narrative review summarizes useful evidence from behavioral science for fighting the COVID-19 outbreak. We undertook an extensive, multi-disciplinary literature search covering five issues: handwashing, face touching, self-isolation, public-spirited behavior, and responses to crisis communication. The search identified more than 100 relevant papers. We find effective behavioral interventions to increase handwashing, but not to reduce …

  • Motivating social distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic

    Open Access•Peter D Lunn, Shane Timmon et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2020•Cited by: 23•References: 15

Messages that invoke thoughts of infecting vulnerable people or large numbers of people can motivate social distancing and, hence, help to limit the spread of COVID-19. Stated public evaluations (obtained via focus groups or surveys) may underestimate the actual effectiveness of such emotional messages
